Review 1752: Sant' Antonio, Apartment
apartments on an estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South
10/08/05 - 10/13/05, 5 nights
Sant Antonio is located in the country about 5 minutes drive from Montepulciano. The location is gated and very private. The apartments are arranged so they are relatively private from one another. The estate is huge and the views of the Tuscan country-side are stunning. We loved the area.
About a 5 minute drive from Montepulciano and the Conad grocery store. Not close enough to walk but that was fine by us.
The buildings are part of an 800 year old monestary. They were in fabulous shape; the renovation was excellent. We were in a ground floor apartment (the Leonardo) with one apartment above us and one on either side. There are 13 total rentals I believe. It was very peaceful and quiet. We had a two bedroom, two bath apartment with plenty of hot water. The heating system worked beautifully (it was cool in the mornings and evenings) and there was also a fireplace with plenty of cut wood available. Very very clean and comfortable.
There was numerous outside seating areas - immediately outside our apartment was a nice private seating area where we had dinner in the evenings and coffee in the mornings. Also beautiful seating arrangements throughout the estate. The views from the shared patio/barbeque area are stunning. The gardens, pathways and patios were immaculate - beautiful and very well maintained. The pool and pool area was beautiful and clean although the weather was too cool to swim.
The furniture was in pretty good shape and was comfortable. There was plenty of seating in the living room for the four of us to lounge in the evenings with books and the dining table was large enough to seat eight. We moved lamps around so we had plenty of reading light. The apartment was very clean. The little room where the fireplace was located was small for four but we pulled in kitchen chairs and made do just fine.
The bedrooms were very nice and large - plenty of dresser and closet space for clothes and the beds were so comfortable. We slept very well. The bathrooms were also large and so clean and so nice - new and sparkling. And plenty of hot water and good water pressure.
I thoroughly enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. It was very small but completely workable. One stove with four burners, no oven but that was just fine and a good sized refrigerator. I cooked full meals three of the five nights we were there and had a wonderful time doing so. The quality of the dishware was perfect - white stoneware, no chips, no cracks. The pots and pans were just fine for our needs - several skillets, pasta pots, a couple of coffee pots, cheese graters, knives, and plenty of working utensils and flatware.
Problems or Bonuses
Having been to Tuscany and stayed in apartments several times this was the best by far. The best surprise was having the tabby cat, Antonio, greet us in the morning at the window. Being "cat people" we were delighted to have him come inside, have a little snack and curl up at the foot of the bed while we were getting ready in the mornings.
Another real bonus was the underground parking garage. Just a short distance from the apartment, it was easy to pull up for loading and unloading and with the cars parked underground there was no vehicle marring the gorgeous scenery.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We booked directly with the owner. Nico speaks perfect English and although his staff did not, our ability to communicate with broken Italian and hand-gestures was completely sufficient. The reality of the place accurately reflected the published information. Nico was wonderful - very helpful and caring. One of the care-takers of the property, Susanna, was so so sweet - always smiling and helpful and hugged us like family when we left.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We will definetely stay here again and would recommend it to every one looking for a peaceful, restful country apartment.
This was an all-woman vacation - I brought my mother and two aunties for their first-ever Italy trip. We drove in the pouring rain from Rome - rented the car at Termini - a harrowing experience, to say the least! When we drove into the area I called Nico for further directions to Sant Antonio. I think he could tell I was a bit stressed because his response was "You can relax now because tonight you will be with us - we will take care of you." Just what four tired Southern gals needed to hear! He drove the few miles to where we were and led us back to the estate. We were so well cared for and nurtured. Cannot wait to go back! It was delightful in every way.
Things to do in this area
Perfectly located for day trips to lots of hill towns including Montepulciano (5 minutes), Pienza (15 minutes), Siena and Cortona (45 minutes). Had several wonderful meals in restaurants and also enjoyed cooking with the fabulous fresh regional ingredients.
