Location

The Farmhouse was situated in the Orcia Valley between Montepulciano and Monticchiello; and a 10 Minute drive to Pienza. The location was ideal for daytrips. The farmhouse had an amazing view of the entire Orcia Valley and nearby Mount Amiata.

As to the farmhouse itself, it is was about 500 metres off the highway in an olive orchard. It was extremely quiet and private with no other residences closeby.

Nearby Amenities

Driving was required to reach restuarants, stores, etc. However, everything was within a 5-10 minute drive. The farmouse was located about 8 minutes from Montepulciano and Monticchiello.

The property manager provides a "first shopping" service. Upon arrival, the refrigerator was stocked with fresh local produce, Tuscan bread, two types of locally made Pecorino cheeses, butter, eggs, milk, sugar, coffee, pasta and tomato sauce so that guests can make their own meals, beverages and snacks. This was very helpful and helped make our stay more relaxed and enjoyable.

The House/Apartment

Le Macchie consists of a beautifully restored old Tuscan farmhouse with three apartments - two large and one small. The whole farmhouse and grounds were in excellent shape and the facilities were well taken care of. Although there were no other guests at the farmhouse when we were there, each apartment was afforded an area of privacy.

The location - as noted above - was extremely quiet and peaceful with no surrounding houses or traffic. The house was about 500 metres from the highway.

Garden

Although we were at the property in early October, the gardens and property were still very nice and patio furniture was available for sitting outside. Various benches and other seating areas, including a hammock and swing, can be found scattered throughout the property so that visitors can relax away from others and enjoy the views. The pool was lovely -- although it was too cold for us to swim in October.

We enjoyed picking and eating fresh almonds, figs, wild grapes and rosemary that were growing on the property.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was comfortable and the facilities were clean. We appreciated having access to a washing machine.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bed was quite comfortable, although extra blankets and pillows would have been helpful.

Kitchen

The kitchen was more than usable and well stocked with pots, pans, utensils, coffee pot, toaster, microwave oven, a gas stove with oven and dishes for two people. It was fun and easy to prepare meals there. If you really wanted to, you could make and eat all your meals there without going out to a restaurant.

Problems or Bonuses

We enjoyed seeing some wildlife around the property, particularly late at night. We saw a wild boar, deer, pheasants, bats, and a variety of birds.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The booking agency treated us very well, always providing prompt responses to our inquiries. The onsite person did not speak English very well, but was very friendly and willing to help. The language barrier did not prevent us from communicating. He was able to instruct us on how to use the appliances, lock the doors, etc.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would definitely stay at Le Macchie again and have already recommended it to our friends. It it the perfect place for a couple's get-away, for a small family or two families with children who are travelling together or even a large extended family vacation.

The owner has other properties available in the area, as well as in Florence and Rome that we would also be willing to try.

Things to do in this area

The location is great for day trips to the following places:

- Montichiello, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Pienza

- Bagno Vignoni, Chiusi, Chianciano Terme

- Cortona, Pitigliano

- Siena

- Perugia

- Asissi

- Sorano and Orvieto
