Review 1800: Visit Venice, Casa Tre Archi

Review by KNJ Walton from Durham, UK

2bed/1bath apartment in Cannaregio, Venice

Oct 22 - 29, 2005, 1 week

Casa Tre Archi is located in the charming Cannaregio area of the city, right next to the picturesque Cannaregio Canal. This peaceful and tranquil area is ideally located away from the hustle and bustle of Venices main attractions, yet is only a short walk or Vaporetto ride away from the main sites.

The second floor apartment is located right on the canal, with great views from the living room window of activity on the waterfront. It is in a very quiet and peaceful area. The bedrooms are towards the rear of the property, making them extremely quiet and private. The apartment is ideally appointed, with plenty of shopping facilities within walking distance, and two main Vaporetti stops a matter of yards from the front door. The Peace and quiet in such a busy city was a real bonus.

The Cannaregio area itself is full of interesting historical sites, including the Madonna del Orto and the Jewish Ghetto. The area is full of interesting walks, and there are a plentiful supply of good restaurants at hand, should you not wish to travel further afield.

Nearby Amenities

There are good restaurants, bars and cafes all a short walk from the apartment. The large supermarket is a couple of stops away on the Vaporetti, but this is literally a door to door service!! Bakers and deli style grocers are all a short walk from the apartment.

The owners, Jonathan and Alisdair have painstakingly compiled an extremely useful guide to the area, with detailed information regarding shops and their opening times.

Their restaurant guide was superb. Not only did it mean that we ate very well, it also helped us to avoid the inevitable 'tourist traps'. Their guide is well researched, and extremely accurate regarding opening times, and telephone numbers to allow you to book ahead.

The House/Apartment

The apartment is on the second floor of a canal side house, and shares an entrance from the street with the family who live on the first floor. Although they were resident during our stay, they were neither seen nor heard. The stairs up to the apartment are quite steep, so perhaps not suitable for the elderly or infirm.

The apartment has been tastefully refurbished and comfortably furnished. The website for the accommodation (probably the best we have ever seen advertising a property), gives a very useful and accurate floor plan. The living / dining room, is furnished with plenty of comfortable seating, and good reading lights. The living room has a bookshelf with an 'extensive' library. This proved to be a huge bonus for us. The owners have accrued a superb collection of books on Venice, covering all aspects of Venice, from art to history and food. It was fantastic to plan our days using the books, or choose a restaurant from their guides. The huge maps and aerial photographs in the apartment were aslso a great help, we had fun re-tracing our steps, and seeing where we got lost.

The dining table has comfortable chairs and a sturdy table. This room has great views of the canal traffic, and is light and airy.

The kitchen is in the centre of the house, and is very well equipped, with good quality cutlery and plenty of crockery. There are: Gas hob (stovetop), electric oven, double sink unit, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, Espresso maker. All the tools and utensils you could wish for - no meal should pose a problem.

The bathroom is also centrally located, and consists of bath, jacuzzi shower unit, toilet, bidet, large washbasin, and a washing machine.

The two bedrooms are well equipped, both having very comfortable beds. the smaller bedroom is just that, but more than adequate with double or twin bed arrangement available, and a wardrobe. The larger bedroom has a very comfortable king size bed, and plenty of wardrobe space and seating. Both bedrooms are very quiet and peaceful, assuring a good nights sleep.

There is no outside seating area, however, the sitting room is light and airy, with fully opening windows. The fitting of Mosquito mesh blinds (screens) will be a bonus in summer.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Furnishings were comfortable, in good condition, and the apartment was very clean indeed. There is ample seating for seven people in the living room. Spacious and comfortable for us three.

Beds were very comfortable, with fresh clean bed linen. Nicely decorated bedrooms, very quiet and peaceful. Bathroom was more than adequate, nicely fitted, and lots of good towels.

Kitchen was small, but very well designed and equipped, with lots of good quality crockery, cuttlery and glassware. Every concievable utensil you could want, from a chocolate curler to a fish kettle. By far the best equipped kitchen we have stayed in. Toaster, microwave, dishwasher, expresso maker, gas hob (stovetop), electric cooker, large fridge and freezer. Small breakfast table would seat three comfortably. We enjoyed cooking meals here, and the kitchen was very well equipped - no gourmet chef would be disappointed.

Problems or Bonuses

The well stocked bookshelf, with all manner of books on Venice was a real bonus - a super treat for all of us. The guide provided by the owners regarding shops and restaurants meant that we wasted no time trying to find things, and we ate superb food in restaurants without being overcharged.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The accuracy of the information on the website gives you a great feeling of what to expect.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would love to stay here again, and would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.

Things to do in this area

Too many to mention, but super bars, restaurants and shops within walking distance. Follow the guide prepared by the owners and you can't go wrong!
