Review 182: Venice Rentals, Scala del Bovolo
2bed/1.5bath apartment in San Marco, Venice
June 2001, four nights
Very good location -- close to the Rialto bridge. Virtually no noise in the evening nor during the night. All of the windows faced the Scala del Bovolo as did the terrace. There was lots of activity during the day since the Scala is a tourist sight but this was not problematic.
Can't beat the Rialto area for food shopping. Good gelato nearby!
Don't know how old the building is but was certainly not built in modern times. I believe that there were two other apartments in our building but can't be 100% sure. The building and the apartment were in very good shape.
There was a private terrace overlooking the Scala. Nothing fancy but perfectly acceptable.
The furniture was in good shape and the apt. was very clean. There were four of us and there was plenty of room.
Beds were comfortable and bedrooms were good-sized (one king, one twin-bedded) and fine -- again, nothing fancy, but good storage space. Bathrooms were clean and in good shape.
Good kitchen and well-stocked. Everything was of good quality. Didn't "cook" but did have dinner in each night with take-out roasted chickens, meats, fruit, cheese, bread etc.
Problems or Bonuses
Mosquitoes were the only problem. Our bedroom had the portable air conditioner in the window but it was installed so that the window had to be open for the vent pipe to go out. No matter how we tried to block the opening above the pipe (it was a typical long french door type window) we couldn't keep the little devils out. This might not be a problem for others, nor a problem if the weather is not hot. Venice Rentals does provide plug-in mosquito repellents but their scent gets to my sinuses and so we can't use them.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
I had read many good things about Venice Rentals and about Denise and Maurizo and can report that they are all true. Very good communication prior to the trip — emails always answered within 24/48 hours. We needed less attention once there since it was something like our 10+ visit to Venice.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Yes to all questions although we probably would be more interested in renting in another area since we like to "explore" different neighborhoods.
Things to do in this area
It is Venice! Walk, walk, walk.
Our favorite restaurant is Rivera on the Zattere. It has a new owner which made us wonder whether we would be pleased with our meal but we were. We will go back again this summer and hope that it still is good.
We have liked the following restaurants in the past: Ignazio, Ai Gondoleri, Madonna, L'Incontro, Fiore (the "in" spot, excellent but small portions and expensive — also one of the few restaurants that you need to make a reservation for). We used to go to Harry's Bar when we first went to Venice (it was less expensive than a good meal in a good restaurant in NYC) but haven't gone for at least the last 10 years -- about the time that they started opening restaurants in NYC. It became outragiously expensive and the owner was no where to be seen (except in NYC) and the waiters who had been there no longer were there. (Those who travel to Italy often and frequent the same restaurants can watch the staff age with each visit. That had been true at Harry's also but something happened and they were no longer there).
