Review 1851: Owner, Villa Buon'Amici

Review by Wendyash from UK

2bed/2bath house near Olbia, Sardinia

September 24 - October 8, 2 weeks

Villa Buon'Amici is located on the outskirts of Olbia on a mainly new residential development which is proving popular with Italians who want to buy second homes. The house is what we call link detached in the UK so although your neighbours are close by it is possible to find a private terrace to sit out on as the house has so many to offer! It is situated on a brow of a hill with lovely sea views.

The area is still under development so there is some building work going on. It is possible to walk to the nearby beaches but this will become more pleasant when the building works are finished. At the moment the access road is very rutted so it not at all suitable for low slung vehicles. The area is convenient for the Costa Smeralda as well as several local beaches a few minutes walk or drive away.

Nearby Amenities

Olbia airport is about 15 minutes drive away which is where you will find a good selection of shops. There are some lovely summer time beach side restaurants just a few minutes drive away with a bigger selection in Olbia.

The House/Apartment

The house is new and we found it to be both welcoming and in tip top shape. The main accommodation is reached via a short flight of steps to a small terrace then via French windows into a delightful "Soggiorno" or day room. It is beautifully furnished in blues and white with great attention to detail and with lovely views from all of the windows. It is light and airy and thoughtfully equipped and extremely comfortable.

The kitchen area is to one end and is simply magnificent; it has everythng you could possibly want to prepare a feast for a huge party. This area is also very attractive with top of the range appliances and equipment.

Adjacent to the Soggiorno is a double bedroom, simply but stylishly furnished with lovely fabrics on the bed and to the French window. On this floor is a bathroom with an excellent shower and washing machine.

There is a delightful small garden outside on the lower level and so many terraces to sit on we were spolit for choice. The biggest terrace has a large dining table and chairs tucked underneath a pergola and it a delightful spot to catch the last of the evening sunshine with an aperetif. The small terrace by the main entrance is comfortably furnished with lovely lounging chairs and a small table and dining chairs,a perfect spot for breakfast.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The house is in pristine order and equipped well above vacation rental standards. We were extremely comfortable throughout our stay. The house has been a labour of love for it's owners and this is quite obvious the moment you enter. The bedrooms and siting room have the advantage of air conditioning should you need it in the height of summer.

The Master bedroom is located on the first floor and has the advantage of yet more French windows opening out on to a lovely balcony big enough for sun loungers. This was a nice spot for the first cup of coffee each morning and watching the first ships of the day glide by! The bedroom is stylishly furnished and once again the fabrics and bed linens were of the highest quality. The ensuite was tip top and our host had provided all our fluffy bath towels as well as beach towels, first class of course!! There was ample storage and good lighting throughout the house.

The kitchen is, as I say above simply magnificent, a convenient and pleasant area to cook in. It lacks nothing and we even found the fridge stocked with enough food to get us through our first day.

Problems or Bonuses

The house was equipped well above our expectations and it was a real bonus to be able to arrive and not have to run to the supermarket. Everything here had been prepared with care and to the highest possible standard.

The probems were really the ongoing building works in the local area but in other areas we visited too. Although this didn't impact too much on our holiday it does make the area look less attractive than it might otherwise be! When all that is finished I am sure the area will settle down to become an ideal location for a beach holiday.

We were unhappy to see so many abandoned dogs and I am as some of you will know already I am trying to do something to help this situation.

On the rainy days we surprised to find the roads very good to places like Alghero which we liked immensely, about an hour and three quarters drive away. We also went to Sassari and toured the Pisan churches so that was a pleasant day trip too.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The Owner was wonderfully helpful before our trip and during our stay we were lucky enough to have the assistance of a young woman who was residing in the Cantina which is a separate apartment. She looked after us very well and gave us some hints and tips about the Sardinia.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I think this house is an ideal location for sun and beach lovers. It is certainly a wonderful destination to just relax in. It also makes and economical base for the delights of the Costa Smeralda, which is, of course, very exclusive and expensive. It's about a 30 minute drive to Porto Cervo, a people watcher's paradise! Out of season it may be more difficult to find things to do so you'd have to be prepared to drive as we did to Alghero etc. We liked Olbia, a busy and bustling port but with an excellent selection of restaurants in all price ranges.

Things to do in this area

We took the ferry from Palau to La Maddelena and enjoyed some of the smaller towns about 20 minutes drive away.

We particularly liked San Pantaleo for morning coffee on Weds when there is a small market held in the square.

This is the village where a James Bond film was shot because of it's dramatic backdrop of rocks.

It is also possible to get a ferry to Corsica or for the pioneering traveller a trip into the interior is said to be very worthwhile!

The beautiful marina of Porto Rotondo is within a half hour's drive, another nice spot on a fine day for coffee or maybe cocktails and to watch the world go by.
