Review 1877: Appartamenti Venezia, Ca' dei Mori

Review by simon76 from Australia

2bed/1bath apartment in Cannaregio, Venice

December 4 - 11, 2005, 1 week

The apartment is located in a residential area of Canareggio, very near the ferry stop "San Alvise". Close to the train station (about 20 minute walk); quite near the Ghetto area and about 35 minutes walk to San Marco. The Grand Canal ferry stop of San Marcuola is around five minutes walk. We found this area fascinating and convenient. It's also very quiet.

Nearby Amenities

Great food shopping close by on the Rio Terra Farsetti and Rio Terra San Leonardo. Good local Osterie and Trattorie and many more options about 10 minutes away on the Fondamenta di Canareggio. The nearest supermarket about 15 minutes walk on the Strada Nova. There was even a small shop a few steps from the front door for fresh bread and milk etc.

The House/Apartment

The building is typical of the area and constructed with exposed beams - I really couldn't guess the age of the building, but it has been completely restored. There seemed to be only one other apartment in the front part of the building and there may have been another two in the back - the entrance was shared with only one other. None of the other apartments seem to be rental apartments.

There is no outside area.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment was excellently furnished with nice furniture and matching cutlery and crockery. The furniture was obviously well cared for and was very comfortable. There were six chairs around the large dining table, but only a double-seater couch on the other side of the living room. The apartment was very clean and everything was in excellent working order.

The beds were very comfortable. Double bunks for the kids and a queen size in the main bedroom. There was plenty of cupboard space and all the linen was modern and matched. The bathroom was very modern and extremely clean (although, as is mostly the rule in Italy - the shower was very small). There was no bath.

The kitchen was well resourced with a modern gas cooktop and electric fan-forced oven. There was a reasonable amount of bench space and a microwave oven. There were lovely s/steel pans and saucepans, reasonable knives and all utensils provided. We had no trouble preparing full meals and were pleased to find an italian coffee pot (caffeteria) waiting for us. There was also a dishwasher.

Problems or Bonuses

The building was being re-finished externally and was completely surrounded by scaffolding which unfortunately prevented us from opening all but the bathroom shutters, meaning it was dark without the lights on. This was a minor annoyance. As it was winter - the internal lights would have been on anyway and the double-glazed windows locked shut. With sunlight from around 8am to 4pm each day, we found that we were out in the city for most of the time anyway.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency merely passed on our enquiry to the owner, with whom we had many cordial email discussions prior to our arrival. He met us at the ferry and showed us through the apartment. He was very pleasant to deal with and spoke English. The apartment was better than we had expected from the internet and we paid the agreed price direct to the owner (520 Euro for the week in early December).

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We will stay there again. The apartment was warm and very comfortable and the owner extremely easy to deal with. My wife and I have no hesitation in recommending this apartment.

Things to do in this area

In the immediate area - visit the churches of Sant' Alvise and Maddona del Orte. Visit the Ghetto. The walk to San Marco is fascinating and filled with intersting shops and tiny Piazzas. It is simply not possible to avoid taking a postcard photograph. Walk over to the San Polo area more wonderful walks and sights.
