September 2004, five days

Castello di Lamole is stunning old feudal castle about 9 kilometers above Greve in Chianti. It is out of the way, and well worth the trip. The Marasco family that owns the Castello has lovingly restored it to maintain the heritage of Tuscany but with modern amenities where needed. They make delicious traditional Tuscan full course meals on the premises.

Every romantic vision of Tuscany you have ever imagined can be lived out here. While there, I thought next time I come I will bring my laptop and write my first novel ... it is inspiring to just be in the beauty and fresh air, amongst the grapes, olives, and Jacopo Marasco's carefully tended honeybees.

A warm and wonderful family exudes welcome to its guests.

Nearby Amenities

You are not far from Greve, a well known wine town with plenty of cafes, and about an hour SW of Florence. However, it is a bit of a climb to the castello, and having a bit of food around helps alleviate the worry of having to go to town just for a cup of coffee when you could just make some yourself in your kitchenette!

The House/Apartment

The castello has a number of different apartments. Nearly all have a small sitting room and kitchenette. At least two I saw have large open living area on a bottom floor, and a bedroom, kitchen area and sitting room on the second floor. I was there for a wedding; the bride and groom rented the entire place for us, and maybe we had 30 people staying there.

There was a pool and some small decks. A courtyard in the middle.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was traditional and lovely. Extremely clean. We were quite comfortable.

The bathrooms were brand new. The bedrooms were traditional, with armours and old fashioned quilts. Quaint and lovely.

The kitchen had just enough to make it useful. Ours folded into an old secretariat style cupboard, so you could ignore it if you wanted to.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

I booked directly with the Marascos. They are professional and warm. This place is beautiful; everything I could ever hope for in a trip to Tuscany.

Things to do in this area

Greve is a darling town. Siena is to the SW, Florence to the NE.
