Review 1919: Il Gusto del Paese, Fondo Le Teglie

Review by Mark from CT

4bed/4bath house near Todi, Umbria

June 2005 and Jan 2006, 1 week

The house was on a hillside with fabulous views from every window. It was near the town of Sismano. The house and surounding grounds seemed to be very private as the only houses you saw were at least one km away. The neighbors had houses closer but you could neither see nor hear them.

Nearby Amenities

The castle which had a great restaurant was a short 5 minute walk. I went to 4 different stores which were from a 2 minute drive for simple staples to a 7 minute drive to buy almost anything. Store hours were more limited than in the US. There was a store in Todi that seemed to always be open however the drive could take 12 minutes.

The House/Apartment

The building was renovated and in excellent condition with meticulous attention to detail in every aspect. The kitchen area was the central meeting area for all 10 of us. At all times it seemed spacious and could easily accomodate more. There were many places if one wanted to read or rest inside or out.

There was no shortage of space. The first night the owner stayed in the annex which was seperate and away from the house. It was great to have someone there to answer our questions and help us plan our day trips. The next day she left as some from our group arrived late. Two stayed in the annex which is a one bedroom apartment with a kitchen, full bath and living room.

There is a living room with 2 large couches and a sound system. The kitchen had a table which could seat 10 people and a counter with 4 chairs. The patio off the front was 1/2 shaded and 1/2 sunny which was another one of the well thought out ideas. The patio off the kitchen had another table with chairs with a garden like setting. The "office" had an internet connection. The pool was great to let you cool down or to swim laps. The 2nd floor had chairs a TV and DVD player which we did not use.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything was of the highest quality, very comfortable and well thought out.

The beds were very comfortable and the linen seemed of the highest quality. The bathrooms were on par with a 4-5 star hotel in terms of quality of fixtures and design. I cannot remember ever having to wait to use one as there were 5 available including the annex.

We cooked 2-3 meals each day. It was a dream to prepare meals. From the gas stove to the double ovens to the abudant counter space it was just fun to make meals.

Problems or Bonuses

On the Saturday we arrived the owner had a welcome cookout which again was just fabulous. She had items in a pantry that you could purchase or replace. It was wonderful to have a large selection of local wine, water and enough food to prepare a couple of meals without having to go to the store. The selection of spices was enourmous. The only items we purchased were fresh produce, meats, wine and water.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner was from the US. I think the pictures do not give you the full picture on how outstanding this place and vacation will be. A folder in the house which has at least 20 day trips with maps, and details of your adventure was another example of the attention to detail.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I have traveled extensively in Europe and Asia. I would rate the vacation among the top in my life. I have made recommendations to family and friends some of which have planned to stay.

Things to do in this area

The castle was a short walk and very interesting. The local winery was a fun visit. The villa had bikes which I used every other day for a long ride. If you want a taste of the Italian country living in an upscale setting this is the place.
