apartments on an estate near Castellina, Tuscany Chianti

When

1996, one week

Location

This charming house was on a vineyard in Tuscany between Florence and Siena. It was the perfect location for sightseeing in Tuscany. The views were beautiful. Some of the views from this house were like picture postcards: beautiful rolling hills, vineyards, old farmhouses, etc. It's off the main road down a dirt road and across from the owner's farmhouse where there are 2 or 3 other apartments to rent. It was a very peaceful, private location.

Nearby Amenities

Just a short 15 minute walk down the dirt road to the main street was the Osteria alla Piazza. We loved it so much we went there three times during our week stay. We thought it was the best food in Tuscany! "Conde Nast Traveler" gave a rave review of it in their magazine in Feb. 1997. You can buy groceries in a small town about a ten minute drive from here.

The House/Apartment

The house was a two story stone and brick building. It is completely separate from the owner's farmhouse. It was built within the last 10 years and blends in with the other farmhouse. It was in very good condition (even had warming racks for the bathroom towels).

Garden

There is a nice terrace in front overlooking the owner's farmhouse. In the back there is a small private area where you can sit and enjoy the views. No pool.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings were very comfortable and in good, clean condition. There was plenty of furniture for the four of us. The had a wonderful long dining room table in the eating area on the open second floor balcony.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bedrooms were small but adequate. They were both downstairs off of the living room. One of the bedrooms had its own bathroom, and there were no windows in that bedroom. The other bedroom was small but with a window with a lovely view of the countryside. There was no closet in this bedroom, but we got creative with a coat rack. The beds were comfortable. The second bathroom was upstairs off of the dining area.

Kitchen

The kitchen was small but nicely stocked. We were able to eat breakfast there every morning and also cooked a simple dinner there. It was a pleasant kitchen to work in with a small breakfast table on one side.

Problems or Bonuses

There were no unpleasant surprises. We actually enjoyed our stay there more and more each day as we returned from our outings. It was a nice quiet retreat.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Doorways Ltd. was a wonderful agency to work with. The information they provided was outstanding with lots of good maps and hints on traveling in Italy. We actually got to meet Susan, the woman we worked with from Doorways. She was over in Italy at the same time we were inspecting some of their properties. Since they go over often, they know their properties well. Because of this, they were able to give us lots of current, helpful information so there were no unpleasant surprises. The onsite owner was very helpful and friendly and he spoke English. He even showed us how he makes his wine. We thought the property was even nicer than we expected.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes, I would highly recommend Casavecchia! We would stay there again, except that we always like to try something new. In fact we loved the area so much that we are going back in just 3 days, and we will be staying right up the road at another Doorways rental.

Things to do in this area

You'll need a car to sightsee in Tuscany from here. It was very convenient to Florence, Siena, Radda, and many other small hillside towns.
