Fattoria Viticcio has an exquisite setting on a hillside overlooking vineyards and ancient farm dwellings. Above the fattoria, higher on the hillside, is a picturesque medieval castle. Below it is the village of Greve with a lovely piazza, shopping opportunities, and good restaurants.

This is a producing vineyard with the winery on the property. The Viticcio label is a good one and is respected by the growers and producers of the Chianti area.

The location is excellent, more or less midway between Siena and Firenze (closer to Firenze) with many opportunities for day excursions to small villages and larger towns. Although it sits by itself and so there is the sense of quiet and solitude, other facilities are not far away.

Nearby Amenities

Unless you are a true walker and don't mind uphill climbs, a car is necessary. It is only a 3 minute drive to the center of Greve, to the COOP, to restaurants, the butcher, the pastry shop, etc. It's 30-40 minutes from Firenze.

The House/Apartment

The complex was originally built in the 1700s, at some point was in a state of disrepair and then restored by the current owner's father. Alessandro, the current owner, has continued the restoration and modernization. The apartments are very tastefully and attractively furnished. The kitchens are well-equipped, including American coffee pots!

Our apartment had one bedroom, one bath and a very comfortable and good sized combination living, dining and kitchen area. It was very cold when we were there and so the very good heating system was appreciated.

The Fattoria has 5 apartments and 3 B&B rooms. For those in the Bed and Breakfast facilities, there is a lovely, large, charming breakfast room. These apartments and rooms are in three different buildings, blending in with the winery facilities to create a total, charming complex.

Set on the Fattoria property among the vineyards is a large swimming pool surrounded by decking and grass. Lounge chairs and umbrellas are around the pool. Each apartment has its own small outside sitting area with table, umbrella and chairs. There is a very attractive central court area which is inviting but is not really a sitting area. I believe that there are barbecue facilities. They were all put away for the winter.

The bed was large and quite comfortable with good linens and comforter. The furniture is antique and quite lovely. The rooms were very well done. The owners clearly believe in quality and have furnished the properties in the same vein as their personal home.

The large bathroom was tiled, two sinks, great lighting, good (but small) shower, and the ever useful bidet. Towels were thick and soft. There was a skylight in the bathroom which kept it light and airy all day, really nice.

The kitchen was well-equipped with pots, dishes, silverware, knives, can opener, toaster, etc. They were of much better quality than many rentals have. Although there is only a small workspace, it would be possible to prepare complete meals in the area. There is a range and oven.

Problems or Bonuses

The owner is absolutely wonderful and accommodating. There were really no surprises, good or bad, other than how completely satisfied we were with the quality and experience offered here.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We did not book with an agency. Booking is solely through the property itself. The owners speak excellent English to my non-existent Italian. The Fattoria more than meets the promise of its literature and internet information.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We absolutely recommend the Fattoria Viticcio as a perfect place to settle in the Chianti area. It is a lovely place and is very convenient to exploration of the area. Panzano and Castellina in Chianti, Radda, etc. are easily reached as are other areas of Tuscany outside of the Chianti. Day trips to Firenze and Siena are very doable.

Not only would we recommend this to our dearest, closest friends, we have arranged to spend an entire year at this property. What better recommendation could we give?

Things to do in this area

Interesting things to do: Drive white roads, visit wineries, explore villages and hillsides, eat, shop, go to Firenze and Siena, wander the markets, marvel at exquisite produce and wonder why ours doesn't look the same, take lots of pictures, enjoy the ambience and loveliness of Tuscany. Feel yourself slow down, breath more deeply and see life through refreshed eyes.
