Review 1997: Sant' Antonio, Signorelli
apartments on an estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South
March 2006, 4 nights
Sant'Antonio is located just outside Montepulciano in southern Tuscany. It is very private and peaceful and the views are stunning. Our apartment was separate and we were not aware of other visitors. However, the owner, Nico Pannevis, was available for assistance and very helpful with recommendations.
Montepulciano is a perfect base for visiting the area and the roads are easily navigable. We revisited Florence one day, Cortona another and saw San Gimignano on the third. We enjoyed driving through the Tuscan countryside and spending the rest of our time in Montepulciano. We are already planning our next trip!
It would not be very safe to walk into Montepulciano, but it is a very short drive and anything you need is there. There are, of course, many small shops and bars (coffee shops!), also a pharmacy and decent sized supermarket. Additionally, there is a wonderful outdoor market on Thursday mornings where you can purchase fresh fruits, veggies, meats and cheeses and various other items. There are many restaurants in Montepulciano. We ate at La Briciola where the house red was pretty bad, but the pizza was incredible! and at Le Logge del Vignola where we had impeccable service and a wonderful dinner.
The apartment (Signorelli) had been very nicely restored and was perfect for our needs. The fireplace heats the whole apartment and since it was very cold during our visit, this was a great amenity! The kitchen is well stocked and there is an outdoor grill and pizza oven which we would have loved to have used had the weather been cooperative. There are 13 apartments on the property but we felt like we were alone.
The surrounding property is typical of gorgeous Tuscany with several terraces with incredible views, olive groves right up to the door and distant grape vines, and, of course, those classic cyprus.
We were very comfortable in the apartment and slept very well. Plenty of places to put clothing, etc and very clean.
The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom a nice size with a shuttered window and good sized shower.
The kitchen was great and plenty of lovely dishware including a teapot and teacups! We did not cook much, but enjoyed having the option.
Problems or Bonuses
One surprise was dinner one evening at Nico's restaurant Osteria del Leone in nearby Bagno Vignoni. Dinner was 4 courses complete with wine and centered on a special pig called Cinta Senese. It was a unique and delicious experience!
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Sant'Antonio was even better than I expected and Nico takes care of everything and speaks English better than I do. I was ill when we arrived and Nico sent us to the pharmacy and even called ahead to let them know we were coming. Fortunately, I was soon on the road to recovery. The staff of Sant'Antonio do not speak much English, but are very friendly and helpful.
