Review 201: Le Case Gialle, Cottage

Review by dale from SC who is a SlowTrav Contributor

cottage/apartments on farm near Bevagna, Umbria

26 April - 3 May 2002, one week

The Case Gialle compound consists of three buildings. One houses the owners and is a few hundred feet from the others. Another houses three apartments (which I did not visit) and the third, ours, is a stand alone studio unit. The latter are only fifty or so feet apart. The little farm that contains the complex is at the top of a (I think) east facing slope affording a view of several miles and on a clear day one can see Montefalco, Bevagna and Spello. In the foreground and ranging down the hill are 700 olive trees. One was awakened by roosters and/or the resident donkey, nothing else.

Nearby Amenities

We did, in fact, walk to Gualdo Catanio one day. It is about three kilometers (uphill), but, of course, its downhill on the return. There is a maceleria and a couple of alimentari in that charming little hilltown. Bevagna, which we know better, has a number of groceries, bars, etc.

The House/Apartment

The building has been there a while and the maintenance of the buildling and grounds is absolutely exceptional. Not a piece of gravel is out of place.

There are outdoor sitting areas which I would call semiprivate and the pool is a few hundred feet remote from the living units.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was adequate and is good condition. The interior, like the surroundings was immaculate. (There was CNN on the tele.)

The queen (I guess) size bed, separated from the main living area by a low wall, was comfortable. The bathroom (off the sleeping area) was modest in size, but adequate and clean as the rest of the place.

The kitchen was a very small marble countered galley with counter height frig and cooktop (alas, no oven). Everything worked and was just fine for cooking full meals. The owners provided a small flask of their award winning olive oil and a bottle of Rosso di Montefalco as welcoming gifts. Further, there was a fresh loaf of bread at our door every morning accompanied by the International Herald Tribune.

Problems or Bonuses

The only surprise was the total perfection of the experience.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Booking was done smoothly through the Case Gialle internet site. The owners, Silvana and Mauro could not have been more helpful, yet they never intruded. They both speak English, Silvana being the more accomplished. Everything was better than depicted in the website.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We intend to spend another week there this autumn.

Things to do in this area

Since we have stayed so often in the Bevagna - Montefalco area we are not at a loss for things to do. We should recommend visiting Perugia, Assisi, Spello, Bevagna, Montefalco, Trevi, Norcia, Spoleto and Todi. All within an hour or so drive. As for restaurants, we recommend La Bastiglia in Spello, Enoteca Piazza Onofri in Bevagna and Taverna del Pescatore in Pigge (Trevi).
