Review 2028: Umbria Rentals, Boldrino Apartment

Review by Tracey from TX

2bed/1.5bath apartment in Panicale, Umbria

March 2005, 1 week

A wonderful home base in this beautiful and picturesque little hilltop town! This two bedroom apartment, overlooking the small square outside the ancient Church of Sant'Michele Arcangelo, dates from the 1300's when it was home to one of Panicale's favorite sons, the mercenary, "Boldrino." Now a modern apartment complete with two spacious and comfortable bedrooms, a living room, entry, TWO W/Cs and lavs (great since we had our teenaged daughter along!), shower/tub combo in one bath, washing machine and a kitchen, the apartment is a great and relatively inexpensive alternative to hotels and B&Bs for extended stays (priced by the week-Saturday to Friday). The kitchen, although very well equipped, is very small (two people can't pass one another without one having to step out to let the other in) but we managed to cook several great meals with the freshest of ingredients purchased just around the corner at the little market and from the stalls at the once weekly street market, both just steps away. Not to worry, though, if you don't cook! Two of the best restaurants in all of Umbria are also just steps away; the trendy Lillo Tatini (our personal favorite) and the more traditional Masolino. Both wonderful choices, as is Il Casale, located just down the road from nearby Paciano. And not to be missed is Aldo's Bar located, yes, just a few more steps across the Piazza, the favorite local hangout for locals, ex-pats and tourists alike. Aldo himself will serve up your daily dose(s) of caffeine and if you have brushed up on your Italian before you get there, will converse with you on all manner of things "Panicale", or so we've been told as we are still "brushing up". But perhaps the best part of renting the Boldrino is getting to know the owners, Riccardo and Mariolina Ripanti. Living minutes away, Riccardo will meet you and get you well versed on the technical aspects of the apartment and give you directions and suggestions on things to see and do. We were invited to their lovely home for wine, enjoyed ourselves so much that we all went to dinner....and more wine, and then returned to Aldo's for espresso and prosecco. Luckily, WE didn't have far to WALK to our beds! Yep, just a few steps...but all uphill! Book the Boldrino with Alison at Umbria-Rentals.
