Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 2071: Gorgacce Rentals, Casa del Lupo
3bed/2.5bath house near Lisciano Niccone, Umbria
April 23-30, 2006, 1 week
We (two couples and a friend -- all in our late 60s, early 70s) found this rental on the web with no references. We could not have been more pleased; it was everything the web site promised, and more. It is in the country, some four miles from anything commercial, like a grocery or pharmacy (and we used both). We did not use the (in-the-ground) pool, but it seemed to be just what a family would like. The interior was spacious, clean and very well furnished, complete with TV, DVD, sattelite hook-up and great sound system (bring your CDs). It's an old, converted farm house, and delightful in every way. We used the kitchen for a number of meals and it worked fine. There is also a washer and dryer available.
The owners were there part of the time; they live in a third floor apartment. They were gracious, friendly and very helpful, but not at all obtrusive. Their local advice was priceless. I had to come two days late, and the owner, David, met my train in Cortona and drove me to the property at night. I only appreciated this after I understood the distance and winding road.
This property is about 5 km. north of Lake Trasimeno and just about 5 km. from the Tuscany border. Many easy day trips are available.
If you want a remote, private, yet spacious, clean and accomodating rental, this is the one. When we go back, this will be our first contact.
Nothis was within walking distance. It was about a 15-20 minute drive to get groceries. There were a couple of restaurants about the same distance away. We went to Mimmi's one night; it was recommended and rightly so. But the highlight of our visit was Calagrana, an state-sponsored agricultural restaurant in near Umbertide. The five of us went to a cooking school there one day and a gourmet dinner/wine tasting the next evening. It was superb. Alberto and Ely are wonderful cooks and hosts. They and their partners had run a restaurant in London for 20 years.
The house was very well cared for and very peaceful and quiet. There are three outdoor area in which to eat, delightful. This was the only rental on this property, with comprises several acres.
There are several outside sitting areas, some shaded, as well as a pool. BBQ equipment is available, too.
Everything was in good shape and comfortable.
The beds were comfortable and bedrooms were large. The bathrooms were fine. Ours was huge, with a large tub and separate shower.
The kitchen was a good size for our group. We used it daily, usually for breakfast and a light dinner. There were plenty of utensils and dishes.
Problems or Bonuses
We had no bad surprises. And we had a number of good ones (see above).
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Casa del Lupo is owned and managed by a British couple and they live there about half of the time. Their daughter and son-in-law live nearby. We found the property to be better than described in the published info (how can you do justice to Italy in April in two dimensions).
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We strongly recommend Casa del Lupo.
