Review 2097: Residence Centanni, Apartment

Review by Kathy from OR

apartments on estate near Bagno a Ripoli, Tuscany Chianti

July 2002 and 2003, 3 weeks each summer

Residence Centanni is on the outskirts of Florence in Bagno a Ripoli. This area os on the southeast edge of the city, and provides easy access to the Chiantigiana or S222 that winds through the Chianti region. Florence is 20 minutes away by bus, with a bus stop within easy walking distance. Residence Centanni is set amidst olive groves with a beautiful view out toward rolling hills.

Nearby Amenities

A Coop is located within a mile of the residence, as are a bakery, butcher, and small greengrocer. One day a week there is a market within one mile of the residence where you can stock up on wonderful fruits and veggies. Bar Mario was our first stop in the morning, and the bus into town stops close to its entrance.

The House/Apartment

There are several apartments in the renovated farmhouse, and four other new apartments in a renovated building right next to the pool. We have stayed in two different apartments, and they have both been very quiet and private. One had it's own terrace, and the other a private graden with a place for outdoor dining. The residence is well restored and spotless.

We had a private outdoor space for both of the apartments we rented, and there is a great pool with outdoor seating and a covered outdoor seating area for those really hot afternoons. Great views from the pool.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Furniture was fine. The mini couch in the living room was ok for perching on to watch TV, but not for lounging, which was fine since we were outside almost all the time. Dining room chairs were comfortable and the bed was huge and very comfortable with individual reading lamps.

Bathroom was clean and more than adequate. Good shower and water pressure.

Kitchen was well outfitted for basic meals and all the pots, pans, etc were like new. Olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper all provided. We ate in many nights and I had no problem turning out meals, although an oven would have been nice.

Problems or Bonuses

Air conditioning included in the price, and was it ever heavenly to come home to after a 90 degree plus day in Florence. We loved this place and woud recommend it to anyone who loves Florence but would like to stay on the outskirts where it is much cooler than an apartment in the city and the pool is wonderful on a hot afternoon! We had a car and made many trips down into Chianti since it was so convenient to the residence. The Centanni restaurant is a wonderful plus and we ate there for dinner many times. One of the brothers who owns the property is a skilled sommelier and the other is the chef; the cooking is classic Cucina Toscana, except for desserts, which branch out into some pretty creative and wonderful options. This place is know to Florentines as a classic Tuscan trattoria, and draws them in for it's bistecca, which is wonderful. Sitting on the terrace for dinner looking out at the beautiful hills and the lights of farmhouses and villas is a great way to end the day. The family also put in a small golf course four years ago, so for those who can't survive without your golf fix, you don't have to!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

You book directly with the owners, who speak English and were great to deal with. They make you feel at home and are friendly, but respect your privacy. The website does well represent the facility.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We will stay here again, probably next summer. We recommend this place without hesitation.

Things to do in this area

Easy access to Florence and all it has to offer. Close to Chianti (Greve 30 minutes away). they have mountain bikes to rent, golf course, wine tours, cooking classes. We took the bus into Florence many evenings and had dinner and then took a cab back for 10 euro.
