Review 2133: Gorgacce Rentals, Casa Catia
3bed/2bath house near Cortona, Tuscany East
May 13-27, 2006, 2 weeks
This house is located in the town of Pergo, a 10 minute drive from Cortona. The house is siuated in a borgo with three other houses nearby and farmland growing grapes, olives and produce in the rear of the property.
Most of our other rental adventures have been in more isolated hilltop spots. This location was a nice change, being walking distance to a good pizza spot, gourmet restaurant, market and bar, all within less than a mile.
This house was built by a neighbor as a gift to his daughter who, with her husband, run an agritourismo on the other side of Cortona. The location is quiet and I would guess to be 10 years old or so. It is a quality house, not luxurious but comfortable, clean and well equiped for an enjoyable holiday. There is a pool that is above ground but built into a sloping hillside, giving the appearance of a built in pool. The house has a queen bedroom downstairs, a room with two twins and a third small bedroom with a single twin. There is a spacious bath with oversized tub and hand held shower on the first floor. On the second floor, there is a large room with a pullout sofa, a bath with shower and washing machine and rooftop patio. The kitchen, living/dining room area is also on the first floor.
Covered verandas on two sides of the house give shade at all times, there is a deck around the pool with chaises for sunning, all private. A dining table is provided for al fresco dining outside
Furnishings were in good shape and reasonably comfortable. We have rented some properties from this agency with very high end furnishings so we have been spoiled in the past but all reasonable ammenities are here
Beds were fine. Single twin bedded room is quite small but fine for one person or child. Bathrooms are tiled and pretty luxurious. Hand held shower in one can be a challenge for unaccustomed Americans.
Kitchen is good with all usual ammenities including dishwasher. Granite counters and wood faced appliances. Plenty of dishes etc.
Problems or Bonuses
We were the first rental of the season at this home. Fridge did not work upon arrival but was promptly replaced by the appologetic owner(this is the real sign of good management, prompt problem resolution).
The father who lives across the garden brought us some of his own wine and offered veggies from his garden. We really liked the proximity to stores and restaurants and the ability to really get to know Cortona.
Gorgacce arranged a one day cooking class at Agritourismo Calagrana, and a separate five-course matched wine dinner all at extremely good prices. We really thought this was a highlight of our trip.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We have used Gorgacce five times over the recent past. All correspondance was dealt with quickly, in a helpful manner. The couple who own the house speak limited English but sufficient to be helpful.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I think that four or five people max will find this spot ideal if the Cortona area is something of interest. Day trips to Montalcino, Montepulciano. Siena are all very doable. I think that this house is a great value, with the two week rental costing less than $1,000 per week in late May.
