apartment sleeps 5 in Cannaregio, Venice WhenFebruary 2002, 1 week ReviewMyself, my girlfriend and another couple wanted to go to Venice for a weekend in February. We could not really afford to stay in a nice hotel but wanted all the comforts. We also wanted to find the real Venice and not just the sites on the tourist map! Using the internet I found the Visit Venice website which containd useful information about a lovely looking house in a slightly more off-the-beaten track area of Venice (if there is such a thing in such a small walkable city!) The owner was helpful and the price was very reasonable. The holiday could not have been better. The house was tucked away down a little street called a soportego. Within a few minutes walk there was an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants all run by friendly charming staff (quite different to the centre of town where tourists seem to be tolerated more than welcomed!) The house had everything you needed to be a home from home, including a lovely collection of books and fact sheets/tips from the owner on where to eat etc. We followed his suggestions and enjoyed several great meals in the nearby restaurants. The walk into the centre and the Rialto Bridge and St Marks Square takes about 25 minutes very enjoyable strolling with plenty of cafes and shops along the way. It gets busier the closer top the tourist sites you get and actually reminds you how perfectly peaceful and stress free the house and surrounding area are. The best thing of all was that we felt like visitors to Venice as opposed to tourists (the owner even supplied wellington boots in case of flooding - this did not happen but we would certainly have resembled locals instead of sodden footed tourists!). I would highly recommend people consider renting this house. We certainly will visit again. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
