1bed/1bath apartment in Pisa, Tuscany West WhenJune 2006, Three nights ReviewI was thrilled to win a three night stay at Behind the Tower in the January 2006 Slowtrav.com contest, but it took Gloria and Marcel's very gracious hospitality to really make me feel like "Queen for a Day!" Marcel dropped everything when we arrived and led us through Pisa in our car to a parking lot where we left the car for the duration of our stay. I'm very sorry we missed out on meeting Gloria, whose prior commitments as well as our own keep getting in the way, but Marcel couldn't have been nicer and it was a pleasure meeting him. The train spur line to Lucca was quite close to the apartment, as was a grocery store, a Chinese restaurant with take-out, and, of course, the Piazza dei Miracoli with the famous tower. This huge and beautiful piazza is jammed with tourists in the daytime, but it's empty and serene in the evenings, when its true beauty shines through. We enjoyed strolling through Pisa in the evenings, when students took over the streets and piazzas to play music, drink and socialize. The apartment was well-furnished in modern style and the bathroom was spotlessly clean. The kitchen was provisioned with not only all the necessary implements but also the basic supplies like salt, sugar, oil, and vinegar, and we also appreciated the lovely flowers that welcomed us on the cheery kitchen table (and the delicious Lindt chocolates in the bedroom)! The apartment is upstairs on a busy street, but we kept the shutters closed and used the electric fan for ventilation, snug in our own private oasis in Pisa. There's a little balcony off the kitchen at the back, but we never went on it except to say hello to the neighbor's cat. Thank you, Slowtrav.com, and grazie mille, Gloria and Marcel!
