Review 2237: Owner, Casa Francescani

Review by Greig from New Zealand

2bed/1bath apartment on farm near Montegiove, Umbria

15th July 2006, 1 week

My partner and I rented Casa Francescani in Umbria close to Montegiove for a week from the 15th July 2006. We booked it online and were excited to be sharing our first time in Italy together.

Right from the start our expectations were exceeded. Pulling up to this beautiful stone farm house was a picture postcard scene, high on the Umbrian hills looking over the valleys and hill top towns.

Location wise the property is excellent, whether driving to the surrounding towns or using the trains you never had to travel far to explore.

Nearby Amenities

The local shop in the small town of Fabro Scalo a short drive from the apartment was also a highlight. We look forward to doing our shopping just to see the local people and experience there way of life. They seamed to enjoy as much as us the interaction with very little understanding of each others language, but enough to pick out all that we needed.

The House/Apartment

The rental section of the house is an apartment on the top floor of the building. Apparently the area was quite poor back in time and the house used to have four bedrooms that housed a family in each, the history of the building only adds to its charm. With two big bedrooms, large comfortable living area and quant kitchen this property is like a home away from home.

Surrounded by established gardens and bush you are in total privacy. On the lower level of the terraced property is a large swimming pool, perfect for enjoying the hot summer afternoons. Two lovely dogs and five beautiful horses complete this hill top retreat.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

All of the apartment is tastefully decorated with ample space for up to four people comfortably. It is obviously well maintained and cared for. It has all the details you hope for, wooden shutters, beamed ceilings all the rustic touches. In the evenings we spent dinning alfresco under a shaded table and chairs next to the kitchen until dark and the spectacle of the Umbrian sky at night.

The two large bedrooms are tastefully furnished with ample space to really settle in, and put you belongings away in wardrobes and draws. The bedrooms have two single beds that can be put together to make a lovely big double bed. This was ready for us when we arrived and you couldn't tell it was to singles with it made with double linen. The bathroom is clean with plenty of linen, a shower, basin and toilet.

The simple kitchen was more than adequate. We looked forward to preparing our meals, which were usually very Italian made with fresh herbs from the garden. Well positioned to make the most of outdoor dining.

Problems or Bonuses

As stated previously our expectations were exceeded this really was a great find. The experience was everything we hoped for and more.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Chiara, the property owner who lives in Rome, uses the property but it seems only on the weekends. Her help with directions and suggestions was excellent. She showed interest in us but also allowed us the our own time to enjoy the place for the short period she was there.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

In conclusion we would highly recommend this property. It was an absolute joy and leaving was only made easier with the knowledge that we hope to return some time in the future.

Things to do in this area

Exploring Umbria and Tuscany was the reason we chose this property. It's great to be able to drive a short distance to explore the many hill top towns and scenery. Suggestions on all the local villages and restaurants etc. were helpfully listed for us in the property.
