6bed/3bath villa in Vezio near Varenna, Lombardy WhenJuly 2006, 1 Week LocationVilla Angelina 2 is a comfortable villa in Vezio, a small, hillside town just a 15 minute walk from Varenna (mid-lake on Lake Como). Our party of 11 enjoyed the beautiful lake views from the five-star pool area, the outdoor eating and reading areas and the extra "loft" which was great for indoor entertaining. The villa was spacious for the entire group, although it did get a bit warm on the third floor during the evenings. Nearby AmenitiesWe walked everywhere as we chose not to rent multiple cars. There were two restaurants less than five minutes away (Il Portichello and one at the Castle - a favorite for meat-eaters!), and then the town of Varenna had plenty to offer just a 15-minute walk away. The hill to and from the villa to Varenna is steep, but taxis are also available. There were two markets in Varenna, plenty of excellent restuarants (Vecchia Varenna being the best as well as the lunch place at the Lido)and additional stores just a ferry ride away in Mennaggio. The House/ApartmentThe Villa is set on an incredible piece of property - several acres at least. Those who rent this property are the only renters onsite, along with the housekeeper and her family who live downstairs. It is incredibly serene from all exterior viewpoints and the pool, which sold our group on the property in the first place, is worth it alone. The villa itself is very nice. Simply stated with modern bathrooms (minus shower curtains however ... remember it's Europe!), our "version" of the villa slept 11 (also sleeps 7 and 15+). There were three couples in our group but only two double beds, so beds had to be pushed together. There is one room with just a single bed and no door, however, there are drapes for privacy and it worked out fine. The kitchen, while small, was suitable. GardenVery nice seating area outside under a pergola as well as other exterior seating which was perfect for reading. All private. The pool, as previously mentioned, was unbeatable (although the water was a little chilly!). Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasFurniture was clean and comfortable, although we spent very little time inside. The villa, all in all, was cozy. Dining room (off kitchen) chairs had enough for six or seven and the exterior chairs had enough for 11. The iPod speakers were a nice accessory to have. Bedrooms/BathroomsBeds were comfortable and rooms were clean with nice drawer space. Bathrooms were very clean and spacious. Nice to have a washer (no dryer) too. KitchenKitchen was small and basic, but fine for our needs. We did cook one full meal for eight with no problems. Plenty of plates and glasses plus a dishwasher. The third floor also had a kitchen which we did not use. Problems or BonusesGood = iPod speakers, as well as stereo connection for an iPod in the loft building. 40 extra Euro will get you high-speed internet access. Ability to buy olive oil made onsite. Bad = AC would have been nice for the third floor. While there were some fans, the room tended to stay constantly warm which didn't make great sleeping weather. Agency and Representatives (and price)All dealings with RentVillas were fine. The booking process was easy. The onsite capabilities were user-friendly. Our representative was always quick to respond and helpful in answering all of our questions (and we had a lot). The onsite person spoke English fairly well. We only saw her the first day at checkin. The housekeeper did not speak English but we usually were able to communicate with a little Italian and sign language. Price in high-season was a little over $6,200. A 1,000 euro deposit is also required (and returned) while onsite. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?I would stay here again if I were to return to the area. I would not book it for 11 people. Too many to travel with and keep happy, and the third floor warmth wasn't ideal. I would recommend others stay but only if they had at least one car for their group. Things to do in this area
