Review 2322: Grifoglia, Barn Apartment

Review by Tom K. from NE

apartments on a farm near Barga, north of Lucca, Tuscany North

August 2006, 3 days

The location was in the country but not very far from the town of Barga which was a very nice town. It was a very private location in a hilly area. Very pretty and lots of trees. Nice views.

Nearby Amenities

It was fairly remote location and would take 10-15 minutes to drive to Barga. We enjoyed peacefulness of the area.

The House/Apartment

We stayed in the "barn" although there were other rentals available. The barn was beautifully restored into an apartment. It had two floors with a king bed upstairs and sofa sleeper on the first floor. Kerry brought in a cot upstairs for our daughter to sleep on (in case she felt she wanted to sleep upstairs with us.) The kitchen was downstairs.

There was a garden and Kerry and her husband Pietro, brought us a nice selection of garden produce to use for our meals. There was a pool which our daughter used and multiple sitting areas to enjoy the outdoors. There was absolutely no noise from traffic which was very nice.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The barn was spotless and everything was in good shape. It was also very tastefully decorated.

The king bed was comfortable. The one bathroom had been done in a nice selection of tile. Simple decorations but high quality.

The kitchen was small but that did not bother us. Kerry had left us some olive oil from the region and bread on the kitchen table. There were enough dishes, pots, pans, and items for us to cook dinner which we did each night we were there. One night, Pietro volunteered to cook something for us in his wood fired oven. We gave him some chicken breasts and fish to which he cooked to perfection. Also the kitchen counter top was granite which was nice.

Problems or Bonuses

Shared their wine, were very helpful with directions, good with communication when arranging the trip. Kerry and Pietro made you feel very comfortable. We liked the pictures on the website and found that Grifoglia was even more impressive in person. One thing worth pointing out is that you need to be careful driving the last few miles as the roads get curvy and narrow however there is very little traffic by their place.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked directly with the owners who speak very good English. We stayed three nights and it was an absolute bargain.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

One of the regrets that we had about our stay was that we could not stay longer. We would love to come back and would recommend it to any of our friends. It's not a luxury hotel but that's not what we were looking for.

Things to do in this area

We visited the town of Barga and wondered around. We also visited the costal towns of Cinque Terre and enjoyed our visit. We also visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa which was okay in my opinion. The other day we hung out at Grifoglia and relaxed.
