1bed apartment on farm north of Assisi, Umbria WhenOctober 2001, 1 week ReviewFirst impression wasn't terribly good. The man on reception was very stern and unwelcoming and his English was worse than my Italian. A bit like an interrogation until he had established we were who we said we were, and then we got a smile and a glass of very poor wine and were escorted to Giomici 1. Quite attractive and atmospheric but the layers of dust and the dead (for some time!) mouse under the kitchen table were not appreciated. Got Mr Stern to remove it. I think he thought I should have done it and not made a fuss. Large separate kitchen was poorly equipped with cooking utensils - only just adequate. Good bathroom with shower and bidet. Lovely rural views from bedroom and living areas and small terrace. The setting is quite lovely and we had some very enjoyable walks in the wooded areas past old deserted farmhouses, vineyards and olive groves. There was no shop on the premises but the little village of Valfabbrica was only 10-15 minutes away by car and the people in the little mum and dad superette went out of their way to be friendly and helpful despite my poor attempts at Italian. Church in Valfabbrica had some amazing modern religous paintings. We ate in every night as Valfabbrica had no restaurants worth visiting and the drive up the hill to the castle in the dark was quite daunting. A good situation for visiting Umbrian hill towns but we wouldn't go back and honestly couldn't recommend it.. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
