Review 2360: Owner, Rome is Home
1bed/1bath apartment near Campo dei Fiori, Rome
Aug. 31 to Sep. 9, 2006, 9 nights
This flat has been reviewed many times by satisfied SlowTrav participants. It definitely lives up to every positive assessment and compliment. Seems to me, first-time Rome visitor, that Rome-Is-Home is in the most desirable location, within close walking distance of almost every well-known historic site and many less well known but fascinating places. We loved the area and were always happy to come "home" to it after wandering the city. The flat, which has been described many times on the SlowTrav review board, is in lovely four-story apartment house on Via dei Chiavari, in a very old and beautiful urban neighborhood of Romans, with only a few tourists in evidence. Within a few blocks are bakeries, cafes, restaurants, small supermarket, pharmacia, enoteka, plus Internet point and even a fitness center, and the fabulous Campo dei Fiori and Pantheon.
Walk to everything, right out the door.
The building is meticulously restored to reveal mosaics and frescoes, ceilings and floor from past centuries. The building is in very good shape, with modern reliable plumbing and fixtures.
No outside sitting area. But sitting with a bottle of wine on the white sofa in the living room with the tall windows open to the breezes and sunshine, plus the sounds and smells of Rome, is even better than sitting outside in a garden. (Especially to me, sidelined with a fractured ankle on Day Six on a family visit to a nearby mountain town.)
Furniture was just right. Enough chairs, enough storage, enough tables, shelves and surfaces. Everything was super clean.
Bed and fold-out sofa are very comfortable. Bedroom is large with ample storage for clothes and luggage. Bathroom is small, clean and efficient. Everything worked. The place smells great, too!
Kitchen was just right for our purposes, which was cutting bread and cheese and fruits, making espresso and opening wine bottles. Easy to light gas stovetop, microwave (no regular oven). Dishes, glasses, utensils all clean and adequate. Nice touch was the lovely large bottle of excellent olive oil (maybe left by previous tenant).
Problems or Bonuses
Only great surprises. Book and music collection. Rome-Is-Home website with helpful info before we left. Many little touches by the legendary Massimo and Biancamaria. We wish we could live there full-time!
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Every part of the transaction was smooth, fair and friendly and conducted in good-natured English.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We absolutely hope and plan to stay here again. I recommend Rome-Is-Home to anyone except perhaps families with small children. (White upholstery, quite a few breakables, open windows could be safety issue.) It is extremely comfortable ... and also delightful!
Things to do in this area
Der Pallero and Ensalata Rica nearby. Ditirambo restaurant just past the Campo di Fiori. The bakery just down the street.
