3bed/2bath apartment in Gioia Tauro, Calabria WhenOctober 2006, 1 week LocationAttico Rosa, an apartment in Gioia Tauro is located in a decaying neighborhood, across the street from an elementary school. Nearby AmenitiesThere are no restaurants or grocery stores within walking distance, with the exception of a very small store that carries a minimum of inventory. Fresh milk and orange juice must be obtained by driving a considerable distance. The House/ApartmentThe apartment was spacious and very clean. It is located on the third floor, with no elevator. The owners live on the second floor. With an elementary school across the street, it is naturally very noisy. In addition, a church is one block away and the church bells peal loudly and frequently. GardenNo garden and no swimming pool. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe furniture was in very good shape and comfortable. The apartment was very clean and had ample seating. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe beds were comfortable and the bedrooms were large. The two bathrooms were very clean. KitchenThe kitchen contained good quality appliances, dishes and pots/pans. Since my wife and I were suffering from a bout of influenza, no meals were prepared in the apartment. Problems or BonusesWe had many bad surprises. The rental price was advertised as €500 for one week, all of which was payable prior to arriving at Attico Rosa. When it was time to leave, the owners presented us with a bill for: Electricity: €86.40, Gas: €49.23, Telephone: €.14 (we didn't touch the telephone); Cleaning: €50, Sheets/Towels: €20, "Consummation Products": €20 (this was for the chicken soup that the landlady kindly made for us since she "felt sorry for our influenza"); Total Fee: €225.77 of UNADVERTISED EXTRAS. Contrary to the laudatory comments of previous renters shown on their website, the "free" meal prepared by the hosts was offered at €35 each for a pasta meal and €50 each for a carne (beef) meal. Agency and Representatives (and price)The Attico Rosa website states that the owners speak Italian, French and English. Their English was very limited and difficult to understand. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? My wife and I have rented over two dozen apartments and villas in Italy over the past seven years. Attico Rosa was the only one that I would not recommend to anyone. Things to do in this areaNone of the restaurants that we drove to were worthy of praise. The meals were fairly priced and the food was so-so. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
