2bed/2bath apartment near Piazza Del Popolo, Rome

When

January 2006 to April 2006, 4 months

Location

The apartment was located on Via Flaminia, just past Piazza del Popolo if coming from Via del Corso in Rome. It was an ideal location, as it was close to the metro, and there was also a tram that would pick up from the metro and drop off near the apartment.

Nearby Amenities

There was a grocery store a few blocks away, a few average restaurants nearby, and a bar just underneath the apartment.

The House/Apartment

The building itself seemed to be in relatively good shape, with about 20 apartments in the building, and the apartment was livable, but made more "student" livable than anything else. It was on the corner of two busy roads, so was by no means quiet.

Garden

There was a large private balcony.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything was clean, but all furniture was run down. Every lighting fixture was a flourescent, not exactly the pictured Italian lighting. It was not comfortable - it was a big space, but all furniture was merely functional. There were six single people staying in the apartment, and there were only four beds, three chairs in the kitchen, and four in the dining room.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

There were two bathrooms, one with a tub that leaked, and another with a shower head that shot water all over the floor. There were only four beds for six people, although six were requested.

Kitchen

Everything was fine with the kitchen, although the lighter button for the stove did not work.

Problems or Bonuses

After about a month or so of living there, the water from the kitchen sink began coming up through the shower drain next store and flooding the bathroom. It took the rental agency almost a month to send someone to fix it. Also, the washing machine broke down, and so dirty water sat inside it for almost two months before someone was sent to fix it, and the agency tried to charge us for the repairs.

We were severely disappointed by the state of the apartment when we arrived. We had requested six beds and there were only four - and it took the agency over a month to add another - we still had five for six people for the rest of the time. From the pictures we had expected something much nicer - everything was run down.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

At first everyone seemed very nice - however there was some confusion with the method of payment, for four months rental, six people were expected to bring 11,000 cash with them on the plane from the US. No credit cards were permitted - only to reserve the apartment.

Once the agent, Marco, had to wait for the payment, he became unfriendly, and remained so for the remainder of the rental time. Any problem we had for which we were supposed to go through him became a great problem. He and his associate, Alessandro, who was only marginally more friendly, were often nasty and rude.

The place was not worth nearly as much as we paid for it. Although Marco spoke English fluently, he chose almost always, unless requested not to, to speak in Italian only to me, the only member of our party who spoke Italian.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would not stay in the apartment again, but more importantly I would not rent with that company again.

Things to do in this area

There is one great restaurant near the apartment and almost immediately next to the tram stop by Piazza del Popolo. I can't remember the name, but it is a great little pizzeria with a fabulous calzone, and outdoor seating. It has both upstairs and downstairs tables, and a very friendly staff. It is across from Osteria del Orso (which I would not recommend). These other restaurants are not in the area, but as a person who has lived in Rome for a while, I would recommend Pizzeria Montecarlo (off of Vittorio Emanuale II near Piazza Navona - ask for Fation), Antica Taverna (in the same area - ask for Mariano), and L'Imperfetto (also nearby - ask for Luciano, the owner.
