Review 2480: Podere I Poggioli, Apartment

Review by Valerie from NM/Italy who is a SlowTrav Contributor

3bed/3bath apartment near Citta della Pieve/Chiusi, Umbria

November 2006, 3 nights

Near Chiusi and Citta della Pieve.

Close to the autostrada but far enough away to feel secluded is the agriturismo of I Poggioli. There are two apartments, one upstairs with three bedrooms, all with en suite baths, and the downstairs apartment with one bedroom. (I believe the apartments are not rented separately, meaning that you won’t have another party above or below you.) We took the upstairs apartment and utilized two of the three bedrooms. The house was lovingly restored with all of the works being carried out by the owners, even most of the furniture was made by them, windows and shutters also being handmade. They provided us with a bottle of wine from a nearby vineyard (theirs having all been sold) and a bottle of their freshly-pressed olive oil. The owner, Silvana, and her son, Lorenzo were very welcoming and kind.

The beds were a bit soft but we all slept well on them tucked beneath the fluffy down comforters. The radiators worked well to provide heat. Unfortunately, thick fog lasted most of the mornings, obscuring the countryside views and we returned after dark each evening, so we never got to see what the farm truly looked like. The house itself is typical Umbrian/Tuscan stone with rustic touches and very comfortable. The kitchen was equipped with everything we’d need for basic meals, but we didn’t end up cooking there during our short stay. The only thing lacking is a washing machine; as we were just there three nights this wasn’t an issue for us, but could be a problem for longer stays.

I Poggioli was the first taste of agritourism for my in-laws and they were impressed with the place, declaring it “charming.” The location is great for touring northern Umbria and southern Tuscany, being just about five minutes from Chiusi and about ten minutes from Citta della Pieve. The train station in Chiusi provides easy access to Arezzo, Firenze, etc. but a car is needed to reach the farm. The apartment is nicer than the photos demonstrate on the website and young Lorenzo responds quickly to emails.

We would return to I Poggioli again, the locale being desirable, the house comfortable, the prices reasonable, and the hosts welcoming.
