Review 2505: Fonte Bertusi, Mandorlo
Apartments on an estate near Pienza, Tuscany South
9/23/06 - 9/30/06, 1 week
Fonte Bertusi is located about 3km west of Pienza in the Val d'Orcia. There are stunning views of the valley, with woods and farmland all around. The property faces west, with the sunsets adding a beautiful golden glow each evening.
Pienza was the closest town for groceries and restaurants. Just a 10 minute drive away. On the road into town there is a small market with parking out front, located just before the town gate. This was very convenient for quick needs. There are many wonderful restaurants and shops within the town of Pienza.
Fonte Bertusi was one of the first facilities that offered "green" vacations in the Val d'Orcia. It is an 18th-century farmhouse surrounded by the Crete Senesi and offers its guests eight apartments, a massage center, breakfast service and an outdoor swimming pool.
There is a very clean and well maintained shared pool with lounge chairs and tables for all guests. There are seating areas randomly placed throughout the property, each offering a different view and experience. There is also an area to play bocce. Covered parking is provided in a discrete area away from the building. I never heard a car coming or going. Each apartment has a private patio which includes a table and chairs.
The property is owned by an artist and it shows in the details throughout the property. There is a very unique, rustic Tuscan feeling created by the furnishings, tiled floors, beamed ceilings and the light through the windows. Everything was very clean and well maintained. All furniture was in excellent shape.
The queen size bed was very comfortable. I slept very well. The bedroom in my apartment (Mandorlo a 1bed/1bath) was large with two chairs, a dresser and an armoire. There were also French doors leading to a small garden area off the bedroom. The bathroom was a nice size and had a large shower and excellent water pressure.
I cooked most of my breakfasts and dinners in the kitchen and found that I had everything I needed to prepare my meals. I really enjoyed cooking with the local ingredients and the kitchen size and supplies made it all so simple and rewarding. Although there was a table and chairs located in the kitchen, I ate outside on my private patio, overlooking the pool and the valley. Perfect for watching the stunning sunsets.
Problems or Bonuses
The only surprise was my initial reaction upon arrival. Although the website provides excellent photos and descriptions, I was completely caught off guard by Fonte Bertusi. I actually had tears in my eyes as Manuella, my English speaking hostess, showed me my apartment and the property. I cannot imagine a more beautiful place to relax and enjoy southern Tuscany and the life, nature, food, wine, people and beauty that makes this area so special.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
I booked directly with the owners through the Fonte Bertusi website. The communication was immediate, warm and friendly throughout all correspondences. Manuella speaks English and went beyond my expectations by not only confirming my reservation via email but also mailing me (I live in the USA) a receipt and property brochure. I paid €580 for the week.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I have visited Italy maybe 20 times and this was my best trip ever, thanks in great part to my stay at Fonte Bertusi. I loved every moment and I am returning next May for another beautiful week.
Things to do in this area
There are many beautiful towns to visit within 10 - 90 minutes of the property. Fonte Bertusi is a perfect and central location for exploring southern Tuscany.
