1bed/1bath apartment in Dorsoduro, Venice
October 2006, Nine nights
This apartment cost more than we wanted to pay (€200/night) but proved to be definitely worth it for a nine night stay in Venice.
The apartment is located about a block from the Zattere vaparetto stop. From that stop there are no bridges to cross to get to it, so it's easy to manage your luggage. It is also only a few blocks from the Accademia stop. And, most importantly and to our delight, it is only down the block from Gia Schiava, our favorite enoteca and, next door to that, Squero for wonderful gelati. The super market is only two blocks down the Zattere. The only gondola works still in operation is right across the canal.
We were met at the Zattere stop by Aurora from the rental agency. She walked to the apartment with us and opened the gate with a key. The door opened into a large private garden. We walked through the garden to the a patio, with table and chairs, just outside the French doors into the apartment. There is another key to those doors.
The entry area is a large space with a dining table and four chairs on the left and a sideboard and the door to the kitchen on the right. The sideboard contains dishes and place-mats, as well as - we discovered later - very necessary mosquito coils. Straight ahead is the living room with two sofas and Lucite coffee and side tables. There is also a leather reading chair and floor lamp. To the left of the living room is a hallway with the bathroom on the right and the bedroom straight ahead.
This apartment had the best lighting of any apartment we've ever rented in Italy. And I fell in love with the overhead floral lighting fixture in the living room.
The kitchen is small but adequate with a washing machine and dishwasher. There is a small breakfast table and two chairs.
The bathroom is nicely appointed with glassed-in shower. The toilet always worked - eventually; sometimes it took several flushings.
The bedroom is quite large with a matrimonial bed, lockable walk-in closet with dresser, small table with chair, and small bench. It has a door to the garden.
We really enjoyed our stay in this apartment and recommend it. We did have minor problems with the agent. The second set of keys did not work in the outer gate door and we needed a second set so we could go out independently. It took several phone calls and three days to finally get another working set. Also, they asked us to call the day before we were leaving to make an appointment to do a final walk-through so we could cancel the damage deposit on our credit card. We did call, and were told that they were so busy that they weren't sure they could get there. They did not show up, and we were somewhat uncomfortable leaving an open signed credit slip with them. However, as promised, they cancelled the charge.
