Review 2522: Le Manzinaie, Girasole

Review by jdmvd from KY

apartments on an estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South

July 2006, Six nights

Podere Le Manzinaie is located in the country side near Montepulciano. It is ideally located for day trips to Cortona, Pienza, Montalcino, Siena, Assisi and Perugia. You can reach Florence in an hour and a half or Rome in two hours by car.

Nearby Amenities

The little town of Montepulciano Stazione is within walking distance and there are several restaurants nearby. Personally, we drove everywhere and think a car is necessary.

The House/Apartment

Built in 1878, the villa has been restored and each apartment contains the original brick ceilings and beautiful arches. Podere Le Manzinaie has four self contained one bedroom apartments, a one bedroom suite and a small independent villa with private garden. Our apartment, Girasole, was clean and spacious. It is a large apartment that contained two bedrooms and two bathrooms (one with shower only). It is located on the ground floor with its own entrance.

The gardens were lovely with many sitting areas, both private and shared. The large pool area was lovely with lots of chaises and umbrellas.

The first bedroom had a matrimonial bed with a ceiling fan, two large furniture pieces to hold your clothes. The wall is decorated with Trompe l’oeil picture of yellow sunflowers, typical of the area. Our bathroom had a Jacuzzi hydro massage tub, separate shower and hair dryer. The other one has the shower.

We enjoyed preparing meals in the kitchen. There were lots of pots and pans and cooking utensils. There is a sitting area. The kitchen is equipped with a four-burner gas stove top, microwave, toaster, refrigerator and coffee maker. China and utensils for at least four people, and ample pots and pans of good quality. There is no oven, except the microwave. When we arrived, the kitchen was stocked with fresh fruit, bread, biscuits, coffee, filters, tea, several bottles of water, a bottle of wine, and there were ham, eggs and milk in the fridge.

Problems or Bonuses

It is a tradition at Le Manzinaie that all guests are invited, at least once, to a traditional Tuscan dinner. Marzia is a gourmet chef, and serves an exceptional multi-course meal with wine and liqueurs.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked directly with Le Manzinaie after reading the glowing reviews on this website. Emails were answered promptly.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

This place is as close to perfection as you can get. We did our research and then did some more. And more. You just never know if you will pick the right place especially in an area you are not familiar with. We have traveled extensively and have been to Italy before but not to Tuscany. We love wine, especially red wine, and knew that the southern Tuscany area was were we were going to base ourselves.

What really made the trip for us was Fiore, Marzia and their daughter, Alice. We still communicate with them on a regular basis just because they seem like family and we want to know how they are doing. We watched Rufus recover from surgery, experienced Alice's studying and subsequent passing of her high school exams, and were amazed at the family's work ethic. From sun up to sun down, always working, never resting. The farmhouse has been beautifully restored (can't wait to see the new addition) and is the perfect location for seeing everything. Have Alice show you the before pictures. It is mind boggling how much work this family has done.
