Review 2527: Rentvillas, Serena

Review by ghillerson from CA

1bed/1bath house near Siena, Tuscany Chianti

Villa Serena, photo by Susan Parrish

October 2006, 7 nights

This little villa is in the country, amidst the vineyards, olive orchards, and sunflower fields. It's slightly off the beaten track, and we felt like we were completely out of the tourist flow, though only a few minutes to a small town, and less than 30 minutes to Siena.

We had our place to ourselves, and the caretaker and his family lived in a separate house on the property. They were available if we needed them for anything, but didn't intrude upon us at all.

Nearby Amenities

It's about 1.5 kilometers to the little village, which does have a fine grocery store (with a lovely liquor selection) and a nice restaurant.

The House/Apartment

Our place was built in the 12th century and is beautiful, old stone, remodelled on the inside to have modern amenities, and in great shape. No problems. The downstairs is a small living room and adequate kitchen, then up a short, winding stairway to a nice bedroom and a bathroom with amazing views of the surrounding countryside. There's also a laundry room shared with the caretaker.

It was amazingly quiet and peaceful.

No pool, but lots of garden and sitting areas.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything was in find shape and clean. Plenty of room, nice fireplace, big country table in the dining area. Plenty of utensils and supplies for cooking.

One bedroom. Very comfortable. We slept well! One bathroom, next to the bedroom; nice shower, nice sink, bidet, toilet. Very comfortable also.

We cooked breakfast every day, and at least three or four dinners in the kitchen. Plenty of room and utensils. Perfect for two people.

Problems or Bonuses

Hiking in the immediate area was lovely. We saw pheasant and wild boar, had very friendly interactions with locals, and felt completely safe and relaxed there.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency was completely professional; no problems or complaints. The on-site caretaker spoke only a little English, but that presented no problems for us.

The place matched our expectations, based on the reviews we had read on the agency's web site. We were looking for a quiet place away from the tourist flow but close to Florence and Siena, and this place was perfect. It cost us approximately $800 for a one week stay.

Note from SlowTrav: We could not find this property on the RentVillas website.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would definitely stay at Serena again, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a small villa in Tuscany. Perfect for any couple who enjoy being in a beautiful country setting. Though public transportation is available, we definitely recommend having a car while staying there. Driving to Siena and Florence proved easy, and we were able to explore southern Tuscany, driving back roads and thoroughly enjoying the views and adventures.

Things to do in this area

Hiking around Tuscany -- there are marked trails everywhere. Driving through Tuscany and visiting small towns. We especially enjoyed an excursion to Montepulciano, and to the abbey and surrounding environs in Montalcino.
