Review 254: Owner, Casa Sora Chiara
3bed/3.5bath house in Montone, Umbria
8--22 July, 2001, 2 weeks
House was in the 14th Century Hill Town Village of Montone in the Umbria area of central Italy. It was a breathtaking location. It is a walled city with the most beautiful views of sunflower farms and wine vinyards. The sunsets were just great. I have a dozens of picures of just that. It was like stepping back in time. The area was quaint with friendly people. Ancient stone homes were interconnected but this house was very private situated near the rear entrance of the town. Just perfect.
You could walk to the local patisserie, green grocer and butcher. On Tuesday we got special fresh pork from the butcher that was a special treat we will all remember. Shopping in Montone was actually fun. It was so uniqely Italian. Just a short drive to Umbertide for more variety. There were two restaurants within one block. One casual but very good and one top notch and wonderful. We found the house so great that we wanted to cook Italian at home often.
The house was wonderful. An authentic 14th century Villa restored with tremendous attention to detail. Full of frescos artifacs and top notch furniture. It was in wonderful shape incuding modern stove, frig and washer/dryer. Even satellite TV and VCR if you have time to use them.
There was a wondereful porch in the front of the house which we used a lot. But the best thing was the center of the town about a block away. Great to sit and have an expresso or drink. The night we arrived, there was the Umbrian Film Festival in the center of town. What great treat and a special way to start our stay in Montone.
Furnisings were very upscale. In great shape and perfect for the location. Great big antique dining table. Spotless and perfect.
Wonderful anique furniture with comfotable mattresses and nice linens and towels. Plus 3.5 baths.
Kitchen was full of top quality pots, pans and all the accessories. We had a great time cooking and eating in. We could even pick fresh herbs for dinner from the window gardens.
Problems or Bonuses
The suprise was how convenient everything was to this wonderful Villa. We had greaat day trips to Gubbio, Citta di Castello, Orveito and Assisi. We even got to the Spoletto festival. For one overnight trip we got to Florence. Travelling through the wine country of Tuscany was even more wonderful knowing we would be back to our home base of Casa Sora Chiara in Montone the next day.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
I found the house by referral from a friend. When we arrived in Montone, Anna was there to greet us. A full time resident of Montone, great Engish speaking and a really big help in planning our stay.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
There were six of us staying in the house and we all agreed -- "it was a perfect vacation place". We saw so many woderful places in Italy from one great central location. Highly recommended.
Things to do in this area
The small hill towns in Umbria were all charming. So many great resaurants, tremendous exchange rate. The mix of relaxing days around Montone and the short day trips to great shopping, sightseeing, museums and Duomos was perfect. An unforgettable vacation.
