Review 2550: Views on Venice, Ca' Salute #207
1bed/1bath apartment in Dorsoduro, Venice
November/December 2006, 4 weeks
Ca' Salute is located on Rio Terra dei Catecumi, a wide filled-in canal that now has a row of small trees planted in its center. We faced a convent where we occasionally saw the nuns doing laundry and other daily tasks through their windows. It is only a few steps from Santa Maria della Salute church and Salute vaporetto stop. Peaceful and quiet except for church bells, which we loved.
Only a small bar/caffe' in the immediate area, but we could easily walk (less than five minutes) for coffee, a small grocery shop, hardware store, a couple of restaurants, and a few other shops just beyond Campo San Vio. Turning toward the Zattere, more restaurants and Billa supermarket were also in walking distance (10 minutes or so.) The Salute vaporetto stop put us in reach of all the wonders of Venice.
Our apartment was on the second floor (third American) of a small building containing five units. We occasionally met other occupants on the stairs but the building was very quiet. The entry and stairs were being plastered and tiled during our visit, reminding us the Venice properties need a great deal of continuing maintenance.
The apartment was flooded with daylight, a rare blessing for Venice. Our apartment had clearly been renovated recently.
Everything was clean upon arrival, and for a very modest amount we asked the person who changed the towels and sheets each week as part of the rental to give the kitchen and bathroom a good cleaning. This worked perfectly, as she was familiar with the apartment and the products to use. She also tutored me on the wash machine and a few other idiosyncrasies of the place.
There was plenty of seating. The sofa pillows were pretty soft.
The one real bed was excellent and was definitely larger than a normal matrimonial (double.) Bedroom size was adequate but without a closet. We stored most of our clothing in the small windowless "sitting room" pictured in one of the web site photos. Thus, it served the purpose of "dressing room" perfectly, since it also contained a metal rack with hangers and a hanging cloth rack for undies, t shirts, etc. Other rooms also provided a few empty drawers and hooks for coats.
The one bathroom was very modern and brightly lit. The shower was small but very efficient and the plastic shower curtain successfully kept the rest of the room dry. Hair dryer and nice toiletries were supplied.
Kitchen was again very modern, with seemingly new major appliances, dishes, pots and pans. The eating area was at one end of the kitchen, a round glass topped table with four chairs. Major appliances were excellent. Dishes, pans, knives, etc. were new and okay but not great.
We enjoyed using the kitchen extensively: homemade soups, roasted veggies, pasta, and the usual salads and such. It was a joy to use and easy to clean. There was a dishwasher, but we did not try it out.
Problems or Bonuses
The primary surprise was the extensive Buddhist emphasis in the apartment decor. This was not really evident in the photos and was certainly not a problem, just a surprise for me.
Also, an unusual quantity of consumables were left for us: easily 50 kinds of tea in the kitchen, wine and grappa on the kitchen counter, and an abundant supply of dried pastas and other edibles.
Overall, the apartment seemed more spacious than I expected.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Email contact with Views on Venice is very efficient and professional. The online description matched what we got. The representative who met us spoke adequate English and handled the formalities nicely. He was not that familiar with the place and referred a couple of detailed questions back to the main office, and they called promptly the next day.
Note from SlowTrav: It appears this property is no longer listed with the Views on Venice Agency; it could not be found on their website though still referred to on the map of their properties.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Yes, I would and will stay here again. The one problem we mentioned in our evaluation was the operation of the main downstairs door, both directly with the keys we were given (several tries always necessary to get the lock to turn) and the remote unlocking from within the apartment did not seem to work at all.
