Rooms and apartments in Manarola, Liguria WhenOctober 2006, 4 nights LocationBeautifully located near the top of the hillside overlooking the village of Manarola. It's a steep walk up from the village center and the railway tunnel but mostly a sloping path with a few steps. Nearby AmenitiesWalkable to everything in Manarola, including the railways station, a very nice Co-op grocery store and deli and one other small grocery, several pizzerias and foccaccerias, some other shops, and several good restaurants. Almost next door to Trattoria Billy. The House/ApartmentBeautifully maintained and nicely decorated. Quite peaceful. Efficient layout, with a large vine-covered balcony and a reasonable if small kitchen. Decently equipped to cook and we did breakfast in a couple of mornings and one balcony lunch. Main bedroom is comfy, we were only two so we did not use the second bedroom which is a single. Main bedroom also opens onto the balcony. Owners' parents live above this unit, which is a tall building on the hillside, you walk down from sidewalk level but the large screen doors and windows keep it from being at all dark. GardenBeautiful outdoor balcony overlooking the ravine in which Manarola is situated with a lovely sea view looking west and north. Most of the village is visible. Nice view of the clock tower from the church. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasSmall dining table inside with four chairs and another plastic table outside with I believe six chairs plus several lounging chairs. The balcony serves as your living room, as there is not a separate living room with a sofa. Everything was immaculate and in fine condition. Bedrooms/BathroomsVery comfortable, tidy, roomy enough. Bathroom was small, efficient, brand new, and plenty of hot water and water pressure. Shower only. KitchenDecent sized kitchen, plenty of dishes and tableware. The cooking items were somewhat limited but fine for a light meal. I would probably not attempt to cook anything elaborate here, but we had several breakfasts and a light lunch cooked here. Problems or BonusesThe web site's pictures really do not do it justice, it's quite a bit nicer than I anticipated. Agency and Representatives (and price)Barbara, the proprietor, and Laudina, staff member of Alla Porta Rossa, are lovely women, very fair and helpful. Very welcoming. We also met their husbands and Barbara's father. They also gave very good advice on local things to do and places to eat. We will definitely stay with them again. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? We plan to stay here again as soon as we can. I would recommend it to any couple or trio of close friends. I would recommend Alla Porta Rossa to do business with to anyone visiting Cinque Terre. Things to do in this areaRestaurants we liked included Piccola Marina in Manarola, the foccaccerias close to the marina in Manarola, and the restaurant Gambero Rosso in Vernazza. We also loved two restaurants in Monterosso al Mare and I will post reviews of all four. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
