1bed/1bath apartment in Perugia, Umbria

When

December 2006, 3 weeks

Location

The location of this apartment could not be better. It is right in the historic center of Perugia! It has its own entrance in a small piazza and is on the ground floor. The small piazza is now used for parking for the surrounding homes, so we occasionally had a car parked on the incline that led down to the door. (It was only annoying when they parked badly!) Once you see how many steps and hills are in the historic center, you will be happy that there is just one small hill to walk up to reach the main street, Corso Vanucci. Really, the location is perfect! It is safe, clean, and not full of students.

The owners of the apartment are lovely and generous people! They arranged to meet us off the highway so that we could follow them by car to the apartment. Then they helped us find a parking space in lower Perugia and drove us back to the apartment! They could not have been nicer.

Nearby Amenities

Restaurants and cafes are close by -- anywhere from 30 seconds to five minutes away. Groceries are little further away.

The House/Apartment

The apartment is in a building that is hundreds of years old. With that in mind, don't expect modern luxury but rather a comfortable, cozy place.

There is another rental apartment next door and the two are adjoined by locked door. (Obviously, you can rent both apartments together.) There wasn't anyone in the other rental when we were there, except for on the last day. It was possible to hear them through the common wall in the living room.

The apartment is in very good shape and was very clean.

Garden

There is no outside area for the apartment.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings were generally very nice. The living room is great and a comfortable place to relax. It's also very bright and cheerful. And yes, there's a frescoed ceiling which is really cool. If you open up the sofa bed you can lie down and look at it for a while.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bedroom is up a few stairs from the rest of the apartment. The first night we discovered that the bed frame was old and creaky. We spoke with Fabio and had a new bed frame the next day! The mattress is hard by American standards but probably average for Italy. There are two closets in the bedroom which should be enough space for most travelers. The bathroom is really tiny and the shower is in a separate little room with the washing machine. Other than the bathroom being really tiny, it was clean and everything functioned just fine. The hot water pressure in the shower doesn't get rave reviews but you have to remember where you are.

Kitchen

The kitchen is very usable though we really didn't cook at all. There are nice glasses, plates, and silverware. The pots and pans and utensils looked like you could make a meal just fine with them. There's a gas stove and an under the counter small size fridge. As is fairly typical in Italy, there's no microwave. Our hosts very kindly put out fruit, wine, and of course, Perugina chocolate for us. There were also tea bags and other useful staples that you don't usually find in a rental.

Problems or Bonuses

The best surprise was the incredibly generous hospitality from our hosts. I cannot say enough good things about them. You will immediately feel welcomed to Perugia! It is a great way to start a visit.

Also, the more you walk around the town, the more you appreciate that the location of the apartment is really perfect.

In the winter, the apartment was warm once we had the heat on for a bit. There's no air conditioning, so I can't say what it might be like in the summer.

Once you know that the bathroom is super small and that the shower is in a separate room, it won't be a strange surprise.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Fabio's English is very, very good. Our communication via email and phone was easy.

We stayed in the low season, so we had a good deal on the price, but I think that even the prices for high season (judging from the website) are a very good value.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Though we liked the apartment, I would recommend the apartment only to budget travelers who would understand that for the price things are not going to be perfect. So my only qualifications for the recommendation would be that the renter keep in mind that this is not a modern nor luxury apartment. It's a charming place and we were comfortable there for three weeks.
