Review 2612: Sleep in Italy, Via Brunetti

Review by Lisa from NY

2bed/2bath apartment near Piazza del Popolo, Rome

March 2005, 1 week

Intriguing apartment well-located for travelers in Rome who don't mind stairs (three steep floors, good for walking off gelato!) The apartment is on the building's third/top floor, with one lovely full bedroom, an alcove bedroom, and a large sitting room with kitchen. Very cozy but also spacious, with ample light and lots of windows. The kitchen is well-equipped for Italian cooks and festooned with hilarious instructions ("garbage must be thrown at the corner every Thursday"). Previous tenants had left many helpful comments and travel-books behind. The owner is an economist/poet and her eclectic books are part of the decor. The flat is right off the Piazza del Popolo (with convenient nearby taxi-stand) and proximate to many tourist attractions, but still "Roman" rather than touristy in feel.

There is a small balcony that overlooks the Via Brunetti and from all sides, there are good views of neighboring buildings.

There is an excellent small restaurant next door, "Opla" and many cafes and other restaurants on the Piazza del Popolo and in nearby neighborhoods. You must walk several blocks to find an outdoor market or a grocery store of any size.

The agency was efficient and timely though somewhat limited in their command of English. We recommend booking travel from the airport with them, which was reasonably priced and provided us with the key/information. You should also consider carrying an Italian cellphone, as the apartment has no telephone and we found it convenient to have one while we were out. Since Rome has limited public transport (the metro system is so limited as to be nearly useless), this location might be too far from many tourist magnets. However, we walked and rode the occasional metro/cab/bus to most locations (Spanish Steps, Forum, parks, Vatican, etc.) and found the apartment to be the perfect respite after a long hard day of sightseeing - truly like staying in the home of a friend.

Highly recommended!
