2bed/2bath apartment on Ortigia, Sicily WhenMarch 2007, 1 week LocationOrtigia, the old town centre of Syracuse was awarded UNESCO World Heritage site status about 10 years ago and the investment this guaranteed has transformed the city from a crumbling ruin to a more comfortable holiday experience. The Duomo is built site-on-site-on-site from the ruins of a Greek temple (you can still see the original Doric columns) to a Norman church and through to the final baroque facade. The Island of Ortigia itself is connected to modern Syracuse by a couple of bridges but was built long before cars were even dreamed of, so is virtually pedestrianised out of necessity as much as aesthetic, but this nonetheless guarantees a magical time. Nearby AmenitiesAmazing, non-touristic food, vegetables and most vividly FISH market near the temple of Apollo; numerous cafes and bars on the Passeggio Addorno; no parking and pedestrianised at weekends so you'll need to carry your bags five minutes from the bus terminus (or unload and then drive back to the car park). The House/ApartmentFantastic two-bedroom apartment directly behind the Duomo right in the centre of Ortigia, You simply can't be more surrounded by ancient history. The apartment itself is full of modern conveniences (full kitchen, DVD player etc.) and has a secluded roof terrace with cooking facilities outside. Five minutes' walk from the Lido. Air conditioning, non-smoking (except for terrace). You can view the home directly: Casa Santo. GardenOutside terrace. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasComfy lounge, although we sat outside most evenings on the terrace. Very clean. Bedrooms/BathroomsTwo bedrooms, one double and one twin both of a good size. TV in the double room. Bathroom with shower. KitchenGood facilities, gas hob (i.e., stove). Problems or BonusesLocation, location, location. Seeing it on the map, you don't realise just how central it is. Agency and Representatives (and price)Booked with Italian Breaks, London-based agency covering all of Italy but run by a Sicilian so perhaps she was biased! Certainly was given an amazing run down of all the properties on her books, sounds like she's personally seen every one and was very forthright and honest about matching our requirements. Excellent value too! Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?Certainly. Fantastic location, lovely secluded quiet terrace, comfy rooms, remarkable city.
