apartments on estate near Cortona, Umbria

When

May, 2002, 3 weeks

Location

Piratello is in the edge of the small village of Vernazzano, 1 km. to the east of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, about 10 miles from Cortona, Tuscany. The house sits by itself -- behind it is the swimming pool, surrounded by an old olive grove. Many birds and very peaceful and just a short drive to the stores in either Tuoro or Passignano.

Nearby Amenities

Five minute drive to the nearest stores. In one direction is a faily large supermarket. In the other in the town of Tuoro you find the newspaper stand as well as the pastry shops and other stores. There are no restaurants in Vernazzano but the area around Lake Trasimeno has many. A car is needed to stay at Piratello.

The House/Apartment

This is an old building, totally reconstructed. There are five apartments in it. All is in top condition.

Garden

The swimming pool is behind the house, in the middle of olive trees. Each apartment has its own terrace with table and umbrella. The grounds are immaculate and well kept up.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment is furnished for six to eat -- chairs and dinnerware. But only four to sleep. All is clean.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

This apartment (Piratello 4) has two bedrooms and one bath.

Kitchen

Everything fine in the kitchen area, off the living room. We ate in seven nights but ate out all the others.

Problems or Bonuses

No surprises. This is our second time to stay at a property managed by La Navicella and we've come to expect everything to be tip-top, and it was.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Elisabeth van Wijngaarden manages some 75 properties. Her office is at La Navicella, one of the properties - just outside of Tuoro sul Trasimeno. Her assistant, Allesandra Cauli, lives at another of the properties, Piratello. We've stayed at both. Elisabeth and Allesandra both speak English as well as Dutch. Brochures are available and they show most of the properties. She can easily be reached by E-mail: see web site.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

The properties managed by La Navicella are highly recommended by us. We stumbled upon them by accident, meeting Mrs. van Wijngaarden once in Sicily. In the summer months of July and August she is fully booked (in all of the properties) with guests from Holland and Belgium. But in the off months she can use more guests and would like to see Americans come. We were some of the first to rent from her. La Navicella offers a remarkable 3 weeks for the price of 2 in all months but July and August. Since La Navicella is directed to the Dutch market, its prices are much more reasonable that those of companies directed towards the USA market. In May, 2002, the cost for our 3 week rental came to just $350 per week.

Things to do in this area

Dozens of hill towns to visit. Tuscany is just a ten minute drive away. Perugia is 15, Assisi 20, Cortona 15, Siena 30. This is THE central spot if you'd like to explore both southern Tuscany and Umbria.

Elisabeth van Wijngaarden offers 10% discount cards to many of the restaurants in the Lake Trasimeno area.
