1bed/1bath apartment near San Marco, Venice WhenOctober 2006, 4 days LocationThe apartment was literally steps away from St. Marks Square, tucked into a tiny street, next to a bridge over the canal. The canal was the same one crossed by the Bridge of Sighs, so it drew lots of gondola traffic. We spent hours watching the boats and listening to the serenades by the boatmen. Magic! There were several other apartments in the building, but we neither saw nor heard anyone else. Nearby AmenitiesThe location could not have been better. Everything was handy and convenient. Bars, restaurants, shops, St. Marks. We found the local supermarket by asking directions from a shopkeeper. The House/ApartmentThe studio was very comfortable for two people. The bedroom was actually set off in an alcove, with no door, but separated from the sitting area. The building was in great shape, recently renovated I would guess. There was a small galley kitchen, supplied with everything we needed to make meals. GardenThere was a tiny balcony, just barely big enough for two chairs. We squeezed in and spent hours watching the boat traffic, drinking our wine. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasIt is small, but quite sufficient for two people. The bed was large and comfortable. Great bathroom, good quality towels and sheets and furnishings. The furniture, except for the modern couch, consisted of lovely antiques. Bedrooms/BathroomsGreat bed. KitchenSmall galley. See above. Problems or BonusesWe weren't prepared for how captivating the scene on the canal was. We were endlessly entertained, not just by the gondolas, but by all the work boats, delivering supplies to the two hotels nearby. It was fascinating to watch. Agency and Representatives (and price)The owner, lives in Vienna. This is his vacation home. His representative met us at the train station to lead us to the apartment. It would have been impossible to find on our own. I think we paid €120 a night at the end of October. It was a very reasonable price; a room at the Dona Palace, the hotel next door, cost €400. The owner was very prompt and precise in all his emails to me. We could not have had a better experience. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? It was a perfect place. I can't fault a thing. Things to do in this areaIn the evening we would go to St. Marks Square and sit at one of the outdoor cafes and listen to the bands that play every evening. For the admittedly very expensive €10 glass of champagne, we spent a magical hour every evening. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
