apartments on a farm near Assisi, Umbria

When

June 2007, One week

Location

The farm was a beautiful property in the rural outskirts of Assisi, but only a short (less than 10 minutes, I think) drive to the center of the city. In addition to going into Assisi, we made day trips to Orvieto and to Norcia and the Monti Sibilinni National Park. We LOVED the area. One suggestion -- get directions from Rebecca to get there rather than on Via Michelin or similar. We got so lost!

Nearby Amenities

A car is definitely necessary. There are, however, two good, informal restaurants (one with a grocery store) a very short drive away.

The House/Apartment

The building was gorgeous and romantic. This was our honeymoon, and it was as peaceful and romantic as we hoped it would be. The bedroom was spacious, the bathroom was huge, and the kitchen had everything we needed. There was a washer in the apartment, and we had fun playing house and hanging our clothes on the line.

Garden

There was a nice semi-enclosed area with a table and chairs shared by the three apartments. On a couple of occasions, we shared drinks with our neighbors in the other apartments. There were also lounge chairs in the yard outside the apartments.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything was in wonderful shape, very comfortable and impeccably clean.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

Again, all wonderful. The bed was very comfortable, and their is both a shower and a jacuzzi tub!

Kitchen

Yes, everything was more than satisfactory, and we prepared dinner a few nights using produce freshly picked from the farm's garden!

Problems or Bonuses

Only bonuses:

  • Wonderful hosts -- Rebecca was extremely helpful and friendly
  • A sweet dog with whom we made friends
  • Delicious complimentary honey and other farm-made treats
  • Fresh flowers in the room
  • Beautiful views of the farm
  • A garden with herbs and vegetables (we had lettuce and zucchini)
  • Tasty and charming local restaurant just down the road.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Very helpful and prompt. Everything was as described.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet, atmospheric and comfortable place to relax. Depending on your mood, you can be energetic and take day trips, wander around Assisi, or just enjoy the beauty of the place with a book on your lap.

We fully intend to go back to Brigolante someday, maybe to celebrate an anniversary.

Things to do in this area

Agriturismo La Locanda dell’Angelo. See Rebecca's review at Brigolante Restaurant Reccomendations. This was one of our most memorable meals. Not only was the food incredible, with what was probably the best pesto I've ever had, but the view, the waiter, the owner ... everything was just so special. Two cautions: 1)It's a pri fixe menu, and there's A LOT of food, so pace yourself! 2) We got so lost, and actually ended up in a field with some dogs barking at us at one point. Admittedly, we are good at getting lost but get very specific directions!

Other things we enjoyed in addition to the usual in central Assisi: The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, in which is housed a tiny church that St. Francis restored with his own hands and from which he began his order. St. Francis' hermitage on the outskirts of the city is beautiful and serene, and also well worth a visit. See pics at Gazetteer of Umbria.
