Review 2747: To Tuscany, Casanuove di Sopra - Fienele

Review by KatieR from CA

3bed/3bath house near Badia a Passigno, Tuscany Chianti

May 5-12, 2007, 1 week

This house was located on a working farm overlooking the abbey and town of Badia a Passignano. The closest larger towns are Sambucca and Tavernelle to the West and Greve and Panzano to the East. It was a good location for doing day trips in Chianti. The house was close to another, smaller rental house, and separated a bit from the owners house.

Nearby Amenities

It was a longish walk to Badia a Passignano which had a small Osteria/bar: La Scuderia, as well as a higher end restaurant Osteria di Passignano. There were no stores within walking distance, you had to drive at least 20 minutes to get groceries. The closest groceries were at the Cooop in Tavernelle or the Cooop in Greve.

The House/Apartment

The house was a nicely restored stone house in excellent condition. The downstairs had a large kitchen, a small hall with a washing machine that led to one of the bathrooms containing a shower, and a large living room. The upstairs had three bedrooms, a hall bathroom with both a tub and shower. One of the bedrooms had a small bathroom with a shower, en suite.

There is currently one other rental, a 1bed/1bath stone house, near to this rental. They are in the process of restoring another house on their property for an additional rental.

You can view the property directly: Fienile.

There was a lovely terrace/patio area that was exclusive to this house. From this yard there were steps down to the shared pool. There were plenty of lounge chairs at the pool and in the yard near the house.

The pool was very nice, although not heated. The weather was warm, so the cool water felt refreshing. The views from the pool were phenomenal.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was comfortable and nice. The kitchen table was large with bench seating so it would be easy to seat seven. The outdoor table sat six comfortably.

The beds were comfortable. The en suite bathroom had a tiny shower - we chose to use one of the other showers that had more room.

None of the bathrooms had any place to hang a towel. There was a lack of drawer space in two of the three bedrooms - although there were wardrobes to hang clothes.

The downstairs bathroom had no-place to hang/put toilet paper except on top of the bidet.

These three negatives were minor as everything else was very nice.

All of the rooms were comfortable and nicely furnished. The towels were larger than average and very nice.

The kitchen was very nice. We had trouble finding pot lids to fit all of the pots, though. We cooked several nights and the layout of the kitchen was good and there were enough pots and pans. The dishwasher worked well.

Problems or Bonuses

If a person doesn't like dogs they might not like this place. The family had several friendly dogs, which we enjoyed. We practically adopted the older mama dog, whom we nicknamed Vechia. She was very sweet and would greet us when we drove up, and sit quietly with us at the pool. The other dogs only came around when the owners were outside with them.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency was very easy to work with. They are based in England, but have offices in the US. They were quick to respond to emails.

The owners did not speak English well, but their daughters did. We had an issue when we first arrived, with the hot water, and were able to communicate the problem with our poor Italian well enough for them to fix it.

We rented during medium/low season and paid $958/week. (The prices have gone up since we booked and paid.)

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would stay here again. It was a wonderful house and a great value. The views were extraordinary. It was a good location for visiting Florence, Siena, Greve, Panzano, Radda, Castelina, etc.

Things to do in this area

We really enjoyed the food at La Scuderia in Badia a Passignano. The ambiance wasn't the best, but the food was excellent. We also enjoyed our two visits to La Cantinetta di Rignano.

Our best days were the ones where we went exploring till mid-afternoon, then came back and enjoyed relaxing by the pool.
