Review 277: Underground Viaggi, Emo

Review by Diane from Canada

1bed apartment near the Vatican, Rome

May 2002, 3 days

Just behind the Vatican, one block away from the Metro station, a quiet, safe, convenient area away from the bustle of mid-town Rome. Behind a locked gated courtyard a one bedroom apartment.

Nearby Amenities

Close to grocery shopping, the Metro and a great local restaurant just steps down the street. Great gelato close by as well. The owner/manager lives in this area so knows it well and can give you all the details on where to shop. You are provided with a cell phone for use while in Rome and owner/manager is on call to you 24/7 for any problems from getting lost to getting a Doctor.

The House/Apartment

Don't know how many other apartments in the building, seemed to be only four others. Apartment was spotless, has air-conditioning and English Satellite TV provided.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

A table and chairs were provided for eating, but no living room. Like a studio apartment. We never spent any time sitting anyway.

Bed comfortable, bed linens near new. Bathroom had large shower, sink, toilet, bidet, blow dryer, soap, toilet paper, and heater.

Well equipped kitchen, but no oven, good for breakfast or light lunch. Not used much as we were out touring for most of the day.

Problems or Bonuses

Transportation to and from apartment provided upon arrival and departure, whether from airport or train. Friendly, helpful owner/manager and his wife.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Owner/manager spoke English. Treated like friends or family. Always available through the cell phone provided for any questions or problems. Reality exceeded our expectations!

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would stay with this company again and have already recommended it to friends and family.

Things to do in this area

All attractions in Rome are just steps away or easily accessible by Metro.

Although renting an apartment in Rome might seem rather boring, its the extra services provided by this company that makes the stay so special. The owner's philosophy of "arrive as a visitor and leave as a friend" became a reality for us.

I found the website just by searching on the WEB. The company offers the most comprehensive services I was able to find for such a reasonable price. We stayed at an apartment named "Emo" for the Via Angelo Emo just behind the Vatican (several other locations are available). Minimum stay is 3 nights. Our apartment was only a block from the Metro station and a short walk to the Vatican. A nice quiet, safe area to walk and not in the heart of noisy areas, but close enough to walk to them. The website has photographs and a map of all available apartments.

Behind a locked gated courtyard EMO is a scrupulously clean and quiet one bedroom - comfortable queen bed, with additional sleeping for two children, a kitchen and bathroom with shower. Air-conditioning and English Satellite TV are provided. All for $250 US dollars, we couldn't find anything comparable for the price in Rome.

The extra services provided by the owner/manager and his wife are exceptional - they personally pick you up upon arrival (airport, train, whatever) and drop you off upon departure (that's worth a few Euros for taxis, the stress of figuring out the train trip or getting to and from your accommodation, especially after a long flight); they provide you with a cell phone for use while in Rome and are on-call 24/7 for any problems (from getting lost to needing a Doctor); they give you a quick tour of the area around your apartment and tell you the location of local services - grocery shopping, restaurants, the Metro, etc.

I know this sounds like I must have some financial involvement to be promoting this company, but I don't, I just thought it a great deal for Rick Steve's type travellers... hidden bargains and all that stuff, who doesn't want a deal nowadays.
