Review 2797: Le Manzinaie, Rose Apartment

Review by thetwoofus from MN

apartments on an estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South

April 7 -21, 2007, 2 weeks

Le Manzinaie was in a very central location to reach Siena, Montepulciano, San Gimignano, Orbetello (the Argentinian peninsula where many wealthy own homes), Orvieto, Assisi and Sant Antimo (an Abbey where you can hear a vesper service with Gregorian chant). Florence is also accessible by train. The location was very quiet, beautiful and private. It was a very relaxing place to stay. We always looked forward to entering the gates to the beautiful grounds after a day trip. In the area, grapevines were everywhere and there were many wine tours available.

Nearby Amenities

You do need a car to stay in Tuscany. It was just a short drive to get groceries and there were many places to eat within easy reach.

The House/Apartment

The building was beautifully remodeled by Fiore and family. It was nicely decorated and was very comfortable. We stayed in the apartment called "Rose" and it felt like "home" after a day of sightseeing. There are four other apartments in the same building (all at ground level) so no carrying suitcases up stairs. We never heard any noise from any of the other apartments. The building is made of stone with thick walls and ceiling. The kitchen had everything necessary to prepare meals. We usually ate breakfast there before starting our day of sightseeing.

There is a beautiful area to sit outside - it has a BBQ. We were there in the Spring from April 7 - 21 (two weeks) so the flowers were just beginning. Le Manzinaie has a lovely pool area also. We were there too early to enjoy it. I believe it can be used starting May 1st.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything was comfortable and in good repair. The apartment was very clean. The hosts, Marzia, Fiore, and Alice do everything they can to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. We have traveled a great deal and have never had our hosts at a lodging take such an interest in our enjoyment of their country. Alice has prepared detailed driving instructions to keep you from getting lost on day trips.

The bed was firm, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was large and had a shower and tub.

The kitchen was very nice. There were all the necessary pans and dishes to cook full meals.

Problems or Bonuses

The only surprise we had was how friendly and nice Marzia, Fiore and Alice were. Since our stay was over Easter - we were worried about being away from family. No need to worry, we were included along with their other guests for a delicious Easter brunch and also the following Easter Monday for dinner. The food was absolutely delicious (all prepared by Marzia and Fiore). I believe in the future Marzia plans to have cooking classes. The meal was accompanied with lots of "vino" and we were able to experience some new after dinner drinks such as Grappa which we had never tasted before. Grappa is very strong and is probably an acquired taste but fun, none the less, to try. What a nice time we had exchanging stories with the other travelers and getting to know everyone better.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would definitely stay here again. In fact, in the future, we hope to bring our children for a family vacation. Fiore is working on a new villa which we hope to rent in the future. It is very lovely and would accommodate our family. If you stay at Le Manzinaie, I know you would not be disappointed.

Things to do in this area

We enjoyed many day trips - I particularly enjoyed seeing the place where the movie English Patient was filmed. After returning home, we re-watched the video and it brought back memories of our trip. Another highlight was a restaurant in Assisi called "La Stalla" in an old stable with a wood fired grill. If you go, be sure to order the appetizer plate with grilled sausages, we enjoyed it so much. We ordered grilled chicken for the entree, which was also very good. The atmosphere is great - "old world." We enjoyed it so much that we returned a second time. There are many wine tours available in the area.
