Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 2836: Venice Apartments Italy (formerly Dimora Venezia), The Zattere
3bed/2bath apartment in Dorsoduro, Venice
May 2007, 7 days
When I was researching apartment rentals, I was looking for a three bedroom, two bathroom apartment that had a balcony or terrace as well as an elevator (we were not relishing climbing stairs especially with luggage or groceries) and this apartment sounded perfect, situated in the center of the Dorsoduro area of Venice. From having been to Venice several times, I knew it was a great area.
The Billa market was a short walking distance (five minutes down the Zattere) and there were many good restaurants (thank you, Chow Venice) within five minutes as well. There was a little market, a couple of places to get gelati, a wine store, and bars with cicchetti all within a minute from the apartment.
The building had been restored and the apartment had been too. It was well equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, tons of dishes, pots and pans, and just about everything you would need at home. It was peaceful and never heard a sound except for the birds singing, the bells tolling and occasional beautiful piano music.
This is the unfortunate part ... the apartment building was located in a lush garden with huge trees and overgrown plants that were swarming with mosquitoes due to the heat (who would guess it would get so hot May 19 to May 26)! The terrace was wonderful in the morning before the mosquitoes started biting. Even Deet did not protect us. Darn Tiger mosquitoes!
The apartment needs a new sofa but otherwise the furniture was more than adequate for four adults. There were six dining room chairs at least, maybe eight. The apartment was very clean. It appears that the family that own this apartment have never cleaned out the memorabilia of the original owner. There are books galore, newspaper clippings, and photos allowing you to glimpse into the life of this family that had lived in the apartment and still own it.
There was a matrimonial bedroom with a double bed, a study that had two twin beds, and a smaller single bedroom. Beds were comfortable but the pillows were very hard and flat. The bathrooms were adequate and bright. We just could not figure out why the owner never put caulking around the tub/shower in the large bathroom which unfortunately causes a minor flood each time you shower! We had adequate towels. And there was even toilet paper!
The kitchen has been remodeled with up-to-date appliances. It was large and great for cooking just about anything. The pots and pans, the dishes, everything was nice; they even had Spode dishes in the dining room hutch.
Problems or Bonuses
Well, when the weather got hot and the building enabled everyone to operate their air conditioners, ours would not put out any cool air. It was horrible as we could not sleep with the windows open because of the mosquitoes, and so had to try to sleep dying of the heat in the apartment from hot weather, cooking, or using the appliances.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The representatives of Dimora Veneziana were so professional and when our hot water heater broke down and our air conditioner could not be fixed, they arranged for us to be moved to another of their apartments (report on that one to follow). When they met us and as well as when they moved us their representative, Monica was so much help. So, I would definitely recommend this agency because they honest, sincere, and helpful.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would stay there if the air conditioner was working and the shower was caulked around the wall (hate to mop the floor each time a person showers). It was a very comfortable apartment.
