Apartments on outskirts of Verona, Veneto WhenJune, 2007, 1 week LocationThe Ca' dell'Orto apartments are about 10 minutes from the historic center of Verona. The location is a little odd, in a neighborhood that's both residential and commercial. As we drove down the street the first time, we were a little nervous that we'd made a bad choice, but as soon as we reached the apartments at the very end of the road we realized that it was a lovely little oasis. The entire property is beautifully landscaped and it's very tranquil. Nearby AmenitiesThere is a supermarket down the street as well as a bakery and fruit/vegetable market. There's also a cafe, post office, and a few other stores. Technically, it's walking distance but it would be a big walk, especially on the return trip with groceries. It's a two-minute drive with the car. You can rent bikes from the apartment owners, which would be preferable to walking if one didn't have a car. For restaurants, there's nothing really immediately in the area other than some cafes and a pizza by the slice place. We went to the historic center where there are some very good restaurants. The House/ApartmentThese are very nice, modern apartments about 10 minutes from the historic center of Verona. I think there are about 18 apartments. There's an underground garage for parking and a separate house for reception and the breakfast room. The property is lovely, with beautiful landscaping and an enormous pool. We had a ground-floor studio apartment, which I recommend highly. It's quite big and has an outdoor seating area facing the pool. (The upstairs apartments do not have outdoor terraces.) The apartment was well-designed with lots of closet space. Everything was new, in good shape, and the place was spotless. GardenBeing on the ground floor, we had an outdoor seating area right outside our door which faced the pool area. The seating area is not very private as it's basically in the shared backyard/pool area, but there are plants and a good distance to separate you from your neighbor. The pool is enormous and there are a lot of loungers, chairs, and umbrellas placed around it. The pool also has a little wading area for kids. (The rest of the pool is quite deep!) Overall, the outside area is beautiful. I highly recommend having a ground floor apartment facing the back so that you can just walk out to the pool. The trade off is that there will likely be some noise if there are kids around. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasEverything is new and clean. The apartment was spotless! It's a very comfortable place with enough seating and places to put things. Excellent closet space. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe bed was comfortable and the bathroom was a good size. The hot water and water pressure were great. There was also a single foldaway bed in our room that functions as a big comfortable sofa chair when in the closed position. KitchenThe kitchen is stocked with a small array of basic utensils, plates, pots, and pans. Though there was no salt, pepper, olive oil, paper towel, or anything else, so you need to really plan ahead at the grocery store. There's a microwave, a gas stove (no oven), good size fridge and freezer. Also... an actual washing machine! Without directions, we were wary to try it but I'm sure they would show you how. Problems or BonusesGood surprises:
Not such a great surprise: We were surprised at check out -- after staying one week + one day-- that our one extra day was charged at the full day rate instead of the better weekly rate. But all in all, it was an exceptional value for the accommodations. Agency and Representatives (and price)Everyone at Ca dell'Orto was very nice and helpful. It's family run and there is someone at the reception office all day until 7:30pm. I believe that everyone there speaks some English. You can definitely e-mail in English for reservations with no problem. We paid €450 for the week, although I think the usual price is 550 for peak season for a studio. For the extra night, we were charge another €100. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?I would definitely stay here again if I were in Verona and I would recommend these apartments highly to anyone. If you travelling without a car, then you have to be willing to take the bus or bike into town. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
