Review 286: TuscanHouse, La Stregaia

Review by Nora from Pennsylvania

3bed/3bath house near Lucca, Tuscany North

June 8-15, 2002, 1 week

The villa is located about 45 minutes from Lucca, deep in the country. It is gorgeous, beautifully maintained and very quiet. The house has been in the owner's family since the 1500's, and is decorated in the Tuscan country style with antiques - may not be suitable for young children. The property contains a working small farm with goats and chickens, olive trees and a vineyard.

Nearby Amenities

One really should have a car because the nearest grocery is a 15 minute drive.

The House/Apartment

The building is an old Tuscan family home that has been renovated. The electronics are top-notch - tons of cable stations, good sound system, lots of Maria Callas.

The garden is magical. There are private areas all over the property, there is a stream with small waterfalls under a picturesque wooden bridge, and a terrace outside the dining room and kitchen for al fresco dining.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Antique furniture, good matresses, great bathrooms, all very clean.

Kitchen was great - antique marble sink, tiny fridge, but since we ate dinner out, it didn't matter.

Problems or Bonuses

The property is more beautiful than I had hoped, but, it takes longer to negociate the winding mountain roads than we thought. Everything is subsequently farther away than the mileage indicates.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Zak at TuscanHouse went above and beyond when our son lost his return flight ticket. He speaks excellent English. Only one of the owners speaks some English, but, as with most Italians, they are very gracious toward non-Italian speakers (like us). We made ouselves understood.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would stay at La Stregaia in a New York minute. My cousin stayed there two summers ago and recommended it to me, and I am eternally in her debt.

Things to do in this area

Lucca is a beautiful medieval city with good shopping. Il Vipore is a nearby restaurant that has very good food and a breath-taking view of the Tuscan hills.
