Review 2863: Roman Reference, Vicolo del Bologna (# 267)

Review by John from US

2bed/1bath apartment in Trastevere, Rome

May 15 to June 5, 2007, 3 weeks

When we arrived and met Dalu and Filippo at the rental at Vicolo del Bologna, 20 we knew we had made the right choice. During the three weeks we were there the venue was perfect for us. At first sight we could tell the apartment was owned by an artist having a European flair and walls filled with art. It is well appointed with a very comfortable sitting room, dining area and all the necessary dishes and cooking utensils. We felt very much at home and the owners were very quick to respond to any questions. An additional highlight was the ability to be on line with the computer that was provided.

We highly recommend this apartment in the heart of Trastevere.

Nearby Amenities

The nearest restaurants were less than five minutes away. A small grocery store was just down the street. Large grocery store was less than a ten minute walk.

The House/Apartment

The apartment was in very good condition. Some nights could be noisy, however the windows were such that when closed the noise was very minimal. There were probably five other apartments in the building. On occasion we would meet someone who lived there and everyone was quite friendly.

As mentioned the apartment is well laid out with everything necessary to work with.

You can view the apartment direclty: Vicolo del Bologna.

It is possible to go to the roof where there are some tables and chairs. It is a good place for drinks and snacks before going out for the evening.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in fine shape and very comfortable. Everything was clean and there were plenty of accommodations for sitting. We felt very comfortable inviting friends in for a drink or a light meal.

The beds were comfortable and the bedrooms were functional. There is one bathroom which was adequate for the four of us who stayed the three weeks. There was everything necessary to work with in the bathroom. There were plenty of towels for both washing and showers.

For some the kitchen might have seemed small, however because of our experience with European kitchens did not cause and problems. There were more than adequate pots, pans and dishes. We did not want for anything in these categories. Cooking meals in the kitchen did not cause any problems.

Problems or Bonuses

Not really. We were acquainted with the area (Trastevere) so the noise level was not a surprise. As mentioned the windows took care of most of that.

Having the full use of a computer with on-line access and a printer certainly was a bonus. One of the renters is a college professor who teaches on-line. For him this was an ideal situation. In addition it was an easy way to keep in touch with family at home.

Update to Review

With regards to negatives mentioned in other reviews, "There are still no doors on the bedroom, but there are drapes that close them off. We did not find this a problem (we were two couples, us and wife's sister and husband), but it is understandable that it could be a problem for others. As far as storing clothes and luggage we found the closet in one bedroom adequate for things that needed to be on hangars. The cabinets (bureaus) provided were fine for other clothing. We stored our luggage in a corner at the end of the hall.

I am sorry to hear these things were the reasons for bad reviews. Our experience was very positive,. I never thought of these things as detracting when I initially sent my review. We found what we wanted and were happy with it."

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency, Roman Reference, was most helpful. We started the booking process about nine months before arriving. We had several questions and they were handled promptly and adequately. We certainly received what we expected.

When we arrived the owner was present to show us around and answer any questions including a good explanation of the computer use. The owner spoke very good English. In addition we had a phone number and e-mail address for the owner in the event we had a question regarding the unit or anything else. The response was excellent. In fact by the time we left we felt we had made new friends.

The photos on the Roman Reference web site are very adequate.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We not only recommend the rental we probably will seek to return in a couple of years hopefully for an even longer stay. Remember, this is not the United States or your own particular home. It is a fine friendly way to experience the wonderful ambiance of Rome. We loved "hanging out" there. And. as a bonus, we were close to everything including public transportation.

Things to do in this area

As mentioned we wanted to experience the ambiance of Rome and we did. We visited many historical sights that we had not seem before as well as returning to others. The Vatican is less than a 15 minute walk away as is the Piazza Navona, etc.

A very favorite restaurant nearby is al Fontanone in the Piazza Trilussa. You will NOT get a bad meal, believe us. In the three week period we were there we ate at al Fontanone at least nine times. Once again English is spoken and the service is very friendly.

Trastevere is loaded with quaint shops and street vendors.
