apartments on a farm near Monticchiello, Tuscany South

When

June 2007, 1 week

Location

We were so lucky for the opportunity to stay in Le Macchie, as our prize for the 2006 SlowTrav contest. It was a perfect place for us, our daughter, and our son-in-law. We were able to relax in one of the most beautiful settings in Tuscany. We were down a long driveway way off the highway - nestled in the Crete. The view was of Monte Amiata and the Val d'Orcia. We loved this spot, with opportunities to easily visit Pienza, Montepulciano and interesting towns.

Nearby Amenities

We were a 10 minute drive from Monticchiello - we made good use of the fabulous Osteria La Porta for coffee, snacks and dinner. We bought groceries in Montepulciano. Nothing was far away.

The House/Apartment

The large house, divided between our Oriolo and the neighboring Lecchino, is large. It looks just like the website and did not disappoint in any way! Everything was clean and comfortable. The grand old furniture and Tuscan style of the building were wonderful. There was also a third rental unit, a small studio. A fourth unit seemed to be privately owned. All looked comfortable and there was no problem with shared space. Each unit had its own outdoor table and chairs.

Garden

The gardens were beautiful, with lots of flowers in beds and in pots. The pool was huge, and deep enough for real swimming. There was also a section with massaging jets and steps for lounging in the water. There was a shower there to rinse off. It was quite a pool - we loved it there, as the views were stunning. One view from the water was to the Crete, another view to the house, and another to the olive orchards.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Having such a large house, there was always a quiet corner to read or a table for a snack. We loved the dining room, with its marble top table and enormous book shelves. We didn't spend much time with the TV, as we were blessed with nice weather and couldn't make ourselves stay inside for long.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

All furniture was comfortable, with the exception of one bed which we found lacked support. There were two large double bedrooms, and a third bedroom that had three single beds. There was a very nice upstairs bathroom unattached to a bedroom - with one of the best views in the house! And a bathroom was attached to one of the double rooms (with a unique shower up a few steps!) A third bathroom - just a toilet and sink -was downstairs. We found all this to extremely comfortable for four people.

Kitchen

The kitchen was well equipped for cooking, and we put it to the test just one night. All was in good working order, and it was a pleasant space with easy access to the outdoors and to the dining room.

Problems or Bonuses

This was a house that caused us all to gasp "Wow" every time we drove down the long driveway and realized that this was ours for the week. The view, location and pool exceeded our expectations. The house is exactly as it looks on the website, and that's great!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We dealt with the Your Tuscany people, and they were very gracious and helpful. They spoke English. The caretaker did not, but no problem, as he was so warm and helpful.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would certainly recommend this house to others. There are many charming well decorated houses to rent in Tuscany. This one I believe stands out because of its setting.
