apartments on an estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South

When

June 2007, 7 days

Location

The accommodation was originally a farmhouse which has been lovingly transformed into a holiday location.

It is located just outside of the small town of Montepulciano Stazione and is convenient for visits to Montepulciano, Pienza, Lake Trasimemo, Monticello Assisi and many other hilltop towns in this lovely part of Italy.

The house is set in lovely Gardens with facilities such as a large swimming pool, Barbecue, etc. There are several rental apartments of various sizes. The location is very quiet.

The icing on the cake however is the welcome and care one receives from the family who run the establishment. They are very keen on their guests getting the best out of their holiday and to this end provide lots of very well presented visit itineraries.

The highlight of the stay however is the evening meal they provide once each week at their expense when all the guests sit down with the family and enjoy the food cooked on the premises along with some splendid wines. I lost count of the number of dishes served up but each one was superb.

One English man and wife there were enjoying their sixth stay and still plan to come again.

Nearby Amenities

The walk to Stazione where there are bars and and shops is about 15 minutes along a country road which is not too busy. However there is no pavement and we didn't walk it but used our car.

There is a very good Pizza restaurant(Renato's) just as you reach the village. We ate there several times.

The House/Apartment

The property was once a cattle farm with a main and two outbuildings. The main building includes the family accommodation upstairs and four rented apartments(I think) downstairs. The old features such as brick arches have been made attractive within the interiors. Our apartment was well decorated with various stencil designs all apparently done by the hostess. It was perfectly clean and well equipped. BBC television World news was available. The kitchen was large with a gas hob (aka stove), toaster, and a microwave (no oven). A table and chairs within. It also had a nice little sofa for relaxed sitting which, had the weather been bad, might have been used.

The bedroom had a comfortable double bed (firm not soft) a double wardrobe with ample hangers.

The bathroom was large, nicely tiled with lavatory, two wash basins, a jacuzzi bath and a good shower unit.

Garden

Outside the door there is a secluded grassed/tree covered area behind hedges where tables and chairs are available to take your breakfast or enjoy a late drink before retiring.

In the middle of the main lawn is a large swimming pool with ample loungers and sunshades of good quality.

Adjacent to the lawn is a large orchid and vegetable plot which provide for a nice little walk. The evening perfumes are delicious.

Nearby is a large barbecue and a shaded area with tables and chairs for enjoying your meal and socializing with fellow guests.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment was comfortable in every way . It was well equipped, in good clean condition. Quite ample for two people.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

Bed was queen sized and for me (6 foot 4 inches tall) proved very comfortable. It was on the firm side, which suited us but those who like a soft bed might not be so happy.

The bedroom has a shutter over the window to keep out early morning light which in June is very useful.

The bathroom was large and with two lovely hand basins allowing simultaneous use. We never used the Jacuzzi bath although it was very tempting.

All was perfectly clean and in good condition.

Kitchen

The kitchen is well appointed unless you want to do a roast (there is no oven) Good quality, clean pots/pans dishes and crockery.

Problems or Bonuses

The invitation to dine with the family and fellow guests was a lovely surprise although, we didn't notice it at the time of booking, it is stated on the excellent website.

I can't think of any bad surprises.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The host and family were brilliant and they themselves add greatly to the value of the holiday.

The website is very good and reflects accurately the reality.

The mother and particularly their 19 year old daughter speak good English.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes we love Tuscany having been there 10 years ago. There is much more to see than is possible in a week. We would not hesitate to stay there again. To anyone who wants to see Tuscany and Umbria, to hire a car and visit the lovely hilltop towns in the area and at the same time enjoy the very best of Italian hospitality offered, in a lovely tranquil location, then I would say you would be hard pressed to find a better place to stay.

Things to do in this area

Visited:

  • Montepulciano ( twice)
  • Monticello
  • Montalcino
  • Siena
  • Assisi (which coincided with the visit of the Pope Benedictine)
  • Pienza
  • Lake Trasimeno
  • Arezzo
  • Buonconvento
  • and more.

Had some nice meals out with very good cheap white wine and superb Espresso coffee. However I would recommend the local restaurant(Renato's), which provides good pizzas & pastas(I even had a lovely tender fillet) at quite modest prices. You can eat in or out.
