Review 2969: Le Manzinaie, Villa Viole
apartments on an estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South
July, 2007, 1 week
Le Manzinaie is located in a beautiful, serene, farm location that is about a 15 minute drive from Montepulciano. The gated property is surrounded by farmland, so it is very quiet and private.
While it would be possible to walk, the nearest town is about a five-minute drive from the property. A very good grocery store (Coop) is only about 10 minutes from the property. The town of Acquaviva had a few good restaurants, but we often found ourselves having dinner in other nearby towns in southern Tuscany.
We stayed in a small cottage, Villa Viole, that is separate from the main house. Our friends used the first floor bedroom and my wife and I used the second floor bedroom. Both had modern, clean, well equipped bathrooms, ceiling fans, windows with screens and shutters, and beautiful stenciling done by Marzia, one of our hosts. The kitchen had everything we needed, including some breakfast fixings for our first morning.
Our cottage had its own private yard, with a table and chairs that we could move. In the morning it was cool, so we would move the table into the warm morning sun. One of our hosts usually came by to offer us a cappuccino or espresso. Even though we had a pot of coffee brewing inside, it was hard to resist their offer. Later in the day we would move the table into the shade, though usually we would spend time at the magnificent pool first. The huge vegetable garden supplied us with bruschetta fixings one evening, and some omelet ingredients one morning. There are lots of fruit trees and flowers growing on the grounds.
Our cottage was comfortable, spotless and tastefully decorated. There were plenty of chairs, both inside and out.
The beds were very comfortable. The views from the upstairs windows were wonderful. The heavy duty shutters blocked out the sun during the day, and kept all of the cool night air in the villa. We were nervous about not having air conditioning, especially in July, but we absolutely did not need it. The bathrooms were spacious, clean and modern.
The kitchen was perfect for us. We were able to prepare light meals with ease, and all appliances were clean and functioned perfectly.
Problems or Bonuses
The biggest surprise was that the property was even better than expected. Our hosts greeted us as soon as we drove up the long, cypress lined driveway. Besides showing us our accommodations, they also offered to help with daily itineraries, brought us glasses of wine, and somehow in a very short time, made us feel a part of their family. All guests were invited to a big Italian dinner in the main dining salon in the main house. Food, wine and conversation flowed freely. What a memorable experience! Also, the property is perfectly located to explore southern Tuscany; we visited Siena, Montalcino, Cortona, Pienza, Montepulciano (of course) and Assisi.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We dealt only with the owners of the property who thankfully spoke English. The price of the small cottage was €1216 for the week in July, quite a bargain, especially when split between two couples.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Not only would we stay here again, it is hard for us to imagine staying anywhere else. The only thing we'd change is to allow a stay of two weeks instead of only one.
