Review 2985: Owner, Villa La Chuisa

Review by Vancouver Family from Canada

6bed/5bath house near Lucca, Tuscany North

July 2007, 7 days

This wonderful house is within a walled estate - once it was in the "country" but the City is now encroaching. It is only a 10 minute car ride to the incredible walled city of Lucca. We would return to the house and to Lucca again - it is a great base for a myriad of easy days trips. And the City itself is wonderful with good restaurants, shopping, history and ambiance.

Nearby Amenities

One could walk or bike ride, but as is typical in Italy, the roads are narrow and the cars zoom by. A car is highly recommended to best exploit this location (ideally with GPS). By car a gigantic grocery store is less than five minutes.

The House/Apartment

The main part of the house is over 200 years old and the annex is 300 years. There are two master bedrooms, both of which have frescoed ceilings and four poster or canopy beds. In addition to the two Master bedrooms, there are two additional bedrooms upstairs (one without an en suite). On the main floor there are another two bedrooms - these rooms are quite dark with lower ceilings. The house is in lovely shape - filled with couches and stacks of books to curl up with. There are several eating areas including a dining room table that can easily seat 14 - an oval table made for long dinners with vibrant conversations.

There is a circular pool - about 18' across and 3' or 4' deep. Perfect for the kids. There are two lounging areas with lots of shade - one by the pool and one by the house. There are grape arbours, lemon trees, an orchard.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

See above.

Beds were great and the showers had enough pressure!! There were four en suites and a water closet in total.

The kitchen was very large as a country estate would need. The fridge is North American sized. The rental includes several hours of cleaning daily so it was as if a "ghost" helped keep the beds tidy and the dishes done.

Problems or Bonuses

As the house is semi-countryside and some neighbours have guard dogs. The dog at the house next door on some nights barked a great deal. Other nights it was quiet. Don't know what the difference was. A friend of the owner arranged tickets for us for an Elton John concert held in one of the town squares.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner, Luisa, is a gracious woman who genuinely desires that her guests have a fabulous stay. Her friend Roberto, the chef who makes the welcome meal and who is available to book for other meals, is a wonderful chef. Luisa's house is filled with guide books and amenities. She is available to recommend restaurants, tours, shopping. She greets guests with an open, warm heart and is pleased when guests respond in kind.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Without a doubt - and if not here (because the house is so large you need to be a big group) then at one of the other properties that Luisa manages.

Things to do in this area

Pisa - 30 minutes away. Cinque Terre 90 minutes. Forte de Marmi - 45 minutes. Carrara - 60 minutes. Florence by bus or train - 60 to 90 minutes. All of Chianti is one to two hours away.
